Someone tried to break into my truck. The lock on the passenger front was ruined, it was pushed back about 1/2 inch. I replaced the handle and now have to replace the locking mechanism. I have ordered one but it comes with its own keys. I want the door locks all they same. I have found that a locksmith can fix the new lock to use my original key. My question is what do I take to the locksmith? the new lock and my original key, or do I need to take out the orignial lock and take that as well? Thanks

A GOOD locksmith MAY have access to the factory key codes for your vehicle, making this EASY for them.

Wouldn't hurt to get a quote from the dealership, as well, likely they can re-key the lock, as well

Pull the lock cylinder and take along the key you want it set for.

Most of the ones I have changed over the years I just pull enough tumblers that it will work with any key.

How many thieves are going to go up to your truck thinking
" I wonder if the tumblers are missing, maybe I can open the door with any old key"

Yup. The locksmith will most likely be cheaper. New cylinder and key and the same old. Cylinders at on time had the codes stamped into them. If you are good with tiny little things you can change the tumblers around. If you are not good with tiny things there will be parts and springs shot all over your shop. Understand?

Most likely he will remove the tumbler mechanism from the old lock and put it into the new lock. You will need the new and old lock and the old key.
