fuel filter on Massey 50

I have a Massey Ferguson 50 with the Continental gas engine. The fuel filter in it has a 1/4" inlet and outlet. Is that big enough?

The original line would have been 5/16", so pushing 1/4" hose over the line will be a tight fit, but it will work.

The problem is not with the size of the line, but "sometimes" an inline filter will not flow well with a gravity flow system. The pleated paper type are more for systems with a fuel pump to help push fuel through.

If the tank is contaminated it will clog quickly, but that's better than fouling the carb.

Personally, I prefer to keep the original sediment bowl and screen and no inline filter, but it does need a somewhat clean tank that is not shedding rust flakes. But there are a lot of inline filters in use out there that work fine.

Best thing I have done is take the sediment valve out and roll up about 3 inches of fine screen and stick in it to catch part of that rust. Never had much luck with an inline filter.

The fuel filter I have is a metal canister type (very basic). When I put a new one on, the hose came off both ends a lot easier than I thought it should have that is why I started thinking that the 1/4" may be too small. I think I will buy one with the 5/16" inlet and outlet and see if that helps. I am also going to take sediment bowl and see what it looks like and clean it out.
