I was wondering if a John Deere 2510 gas engine could be a direct swap to my 1961 John Deere 2010 RU gas engine?

no... 40 or 45 combine engine plus
interchanging exhaust
manifold,governor, some other misc.

I guess I was ill-informed. Thank you

i thought it was the 55 only that carried the same engine, gas or diesel, i had not heard the 40/45's would work

as B&D says, a 53 series detriot will work. which i want to try when i can find a 2 or 3-53 to put in my 2010 crawler HAHAH

2510 engine same as 2020. The 6 cylinder combine engine from the 55 will bolt up to the 2010, you just won't have a hood or side rails long enough.

Iirc the Dubuque four and six were built and used prior to the release of the New Generation Tractors in 1960 ?

The 45 combine gas was a 165 cube that will bolt right in a 2010 or even a 1010. They were the new generation after the 2 cylinders. The 2010 gas had a 145 ci. The horrible part of these engines was the sleeve plate design.

I’ll have a look at the parts book for the 45 and 55 . Various power plants used iirc.

The 45 was a 4 cylinder and 55 was a 6, however they did use the same bell housing. Aquaintance of mine put a 6 cylinder 55 engine in a 2010. Another put a 165 gas out of a 45 into a 1010, said it was pretty peppy. I have owned several 2010 and one 1010 and one 55 combine, never thought they were worth spending much on them. I had a 2010 I used for several years but pretty poorly designed engines, sorry brakes, and a complex lift system for what they were.

My brother had a 2010 row crop with a cracked head. I had a 40 parts combine here. I took the head off that and it bolted right on. Seems like it was a little thinner and I had to use the 40 head bolts and push rods. I'm thinking a 45 head would have been a direct fit,so the whole engine likely would have been a direct bolt up too.
