1986 f150 with 351 v8..the rotor I got with it is for a distributor shaft of about 1/4"...mine is a 5/8" shaft...What should I tell the folks from advanced auto to find the right rotor..thx

Was there an option for engines that year ? a 351 Windsor or 351M are different engines but I don't know if the rotor is different ?

Just got off the phone with a wichita adv. auto parts store..he has a D166P rotor with a 5/8" dia hole for the shaft..

I don't know which engine it is...Think I'll head into town tommorrow and do a refund/exchange..

I would suspect if it uses the large hole rotor it has the old-style distributor with a magnetic pickup and the ignition module on the LH fenderwell.

The small shaft distributor would be the newer style using the (in)famous "TFI" ignition system.

NOT sure what year that was changed or if there was any overlap.

This is the spec for the D166P;

Exact Fit for your 1986 Ford F-150 Pickup
[u:d950bdb0e9]w/o EEC IV; w/ Triangular Rotor; OE Style[/u:d950bdb0e9]

All the underlined info is not something I would know anything about or look for doing a search for the parts..

Advance Auto is the closest auto parts for me, and the place I go first, but I try to have parts numbers from the internet when I walk in the door. When I need customer service, it's Napa.

By 1986 the 351M was no longer offered. That should be a 351W, not to say someone didn't change it in the last 32 years. I think EFI was an option so I don't know if there is a difference in ignitions between the carb and EFI. Or it may only be the 302 that you had the choice I'm not 100% sure on that.

ake old rotor & ask for a match.

Rockauto.com is the closest for me. I don't need the 45 minute round trip into town and the parts come to the mail box in a few
days while I drive another rig. I figure to save gas and time.

Same here..Online advanced autoparts chat duds were'nt all that keen on doing a mailback/refund. They pushed for having a local store do that..So today I get to spend some tme on the road..

thanks for the help..red1
