Interesting comment at the elevator today

I took one of the semis in first thing to dump this morning - the old ?87 Ford L8000. I made some comment about him not needing to go far to probe it because I had the hopper full to the top. The boys at the elevator have used my truck to take their CDL test, so they all know the gutless wonder of the 3208 Cat. I made some comment about how it was so full I couldn?t outrun my troubles.

He said ?No, look at what you drive. You don?t need to outrun anything because it?s all paid for. It?s obvious how you treat your stuff because it?s yours and it all still runs.? Kind of made me think. I guess I do see most of the guys on a lease using their stuff like they stole it. Not all, but most (at least here). I get a kick out of using the old 50?s Chevys around the farm, but I didn?t expect the old trucks were talking about me the whole time!

I may not run 1950s stuff but I will agree with buying something and treating it right. You then can get decades of use out of it. Our cost of production is much lower because of the paid for stuff that gets used. Just about everything we use was bought with troubles and repaired to good working order.

Nothing wrong with old stuff I use 20,30,40 and 50 series deere tractors and a 7720 and 9500 to harvest. I haul with an 86 mack a dump trailer, people laugh till they see me gross over 100k with 1100 bushel of corn.

I make my living and farm with old equipment

The old stuff seems to just go and go, and when it won't go it is usually a simple fix that takes only a few minutes. The new stuff is wrecker bait. It breaks down and needs a technician with a college degree to figure out what the computer did wrong. Then when it is "fixed" it only runs a few days and back to square one.

Could the majority of the leased equipment be operated by employees and temporary hires rather than the the owners/leasers.

Myself I do not want to extra expense of something brand new and have no need to out do the Jones's next door,, I prefer using what I grew up with. On the 3208, I would still take one of them any day over a screaming jimmy like I had to drive in some of the trucks we had where I worked for 20 years,, the V-8 had some guts to them but we had three with a V-6 what a PILE as far as torque and HP unless you was wrapped tight and within the 50 rpms of power band lol my FAV engine was a CAT 3406 and I was lucky enough to add up 1.5 million on them,, the older equipment I use always makes me smile and Proud of the job they continue to do, the elevator still has my name at the top of the list for the cleanest grain samples in its entire history here, they still comment even today on it, so others can have the brand new pickups and equipment and the payments,,
