Little excitement at work

Got to the shop tonight to close up and found the shop full of smoke. Couldn't find a scource for the fire so called the fire department. Turned out to be a garbage can that burnt and melted the cord from the welder, also singed the grease barrel. Was close to being bad, but didn't amount to much in the end.

Welders and trash cans will never be allowed near each other again. Their love is afire. they must not be allowed to decreate. Jim

I'll have to remember that.
Got a trash can that's not close, but could be depending on where I weld.

Looks like a plastic trash can in photo. FYI at one time I worked in a factory working with tooling, OSHA walk thru inspection did not like our trash can, metal can with lid or swinging lid required for any wiping rags / towels that may be oily, contain paint products, solvents ect. or be near an ignition source like grinding, welding, heat sources and I don't remember all, We had a few days to correct as an inspection was coming that would levy fines. I believe this first inspection was preformed by the company's insurance company as a one time courtesy, but I may be wrong. I do know new trash cans appeared by magic in a few hours and the outside trash hopper was near overflowing.

I doubt the welder had anything to do with it, it hadn't been used in a week or more. It was just a coincidence that the can was nearby.

You did the one thing so many people do NOT do. You called the fire department. So many people look around and then they try to fight it themselves. If you get ignition and it turns into a full blown involved fire you are now out of extinguishers and the fire department could have been pulling into the parking lot to save the day. Ya done good.

Now you will have to put up with getting a big raise. Well, you should, you deserve it. There is a new farm to pay for!!

cigarettes dumped from ash trays into trash containers at closing time used to burn down a lot of restaurants.
