What is it?

Sorry for phone's poor pic quality. This tool is about 1/2 square at one end and tapers to about 3/8 inch square at small end. One side of tapered has a grove in it.

Could this tool be used as an easyout?

That is exactly what that is. I have several sizes. They are not the best, but will work in some cases where others won't.

Unlike the spiral ones, I don't think this type is quite so self defeating- by spreading the object. Still a chancy prospect of having success.

As others have said yes it is an easy out.
I probably have a set of every style ever made in the toolbox.

The ones like shown in your photo work real good for removing broken off brass fittings, they bite in good at four points spreading the load without spreading the piece being removed as long as you do not try hammering them to China first.

My favorite ones are the splined ones made by Rigid.

(quoted from post at 08:12:04 11/16/18) The more I think about it, I think my Snap on ones have a little twist on the end. But I know I have some exactly like the one pictured.

Most of my smaller ones like that also have a twist on the end but I am pretty sure they didn't when I bought them.

Never had much success with either type of easy-out, the square style or the spiral. Heat, heat, and more heat seems to be the solution to start with at least. Without it, nothing seems to work afterwards.

I have had good luck grinding down an allen wrench and driving it in. The set in my tool box is mayhew and hold up well like their other products

It's an easy-out intended for use with soft metals, brass, aluminum fittings, etc.

Theory is it will grip without expanding the fitting.
