86' F150...351 V8

That '86 has an ignition module silver box about 5 inches square. It should be on the. . . Pass inner fender. (?)
It comes in two variations. This is directly where the wires meet the module box. Blue is one option and the other color currently escapes my
aging brain. Black?
I have a spare behind the seat at all times. I figure it is cheap $30 insurance.

Like said no points. It does have a cap and rotor that need replaced at times along with plugs and wires.

Bruce, we had an '85 van with the same ignition module. Just like you, we always had a spare in the vehicle as those modules seem to croak at the wrong time. Very easy to replace and cheap insurance indeed.

(severe red face)

Wonder why I couldn't find it on google! Never had the distributor cap off..just figured it had points underneath...

I most humbly thank you...

My ignition mod is on the drivers side wheel well cover...And I've gotten stuck a couple times when it went out..Dang it! I thought you had to use a diagnostics tool to install and set one up. Does it just hookup to the existing harness? I may buy one..Had to call a tow truck one time when it went out..

Two things...

1. By 1986, didn't certain Fords have the (in)famous "TFI" module rather than the "big box on the fender"? (Rock Auto shows both styles for the 1986 351.)

2. Whether the older-style "big box on the fender", or the "newer style" TFI module, the module is only a part of the failure equation... the ignition pickup coil or the electronic pickup for the TFI module are failure-prone, as well, in my humble experience and having a spare control box along won't always get you home!.

Just bought the ign. module and distributor cap and rotor..Trying to find the window washer/radiator overflow resevour...
