6v battery reversed charged

hello, im working on a friends 8n with a 6v system. he reversed charged his battery after it went dead. im working on the engine for a blown head gasket and was going to charge the battery while its down for repair. he did not complain of a charging system problem. when I correctly discharge and charge the battery back, will the charging system still work?

Hello jdaxle,

I recommend a new battery. I am pretty sure that if you
totally discharge it, it will come back to life, BUT the way
to check it is with a load tester. If he did not start the
engine after he charged the battery, the charging system
should not be compromised. At worst he may have cooked the voltage
regulator,

Guido.

Agree with Guido. Fist hook a headlamp to the batter and let it fully
discharge for a day. Total stone dead. Then a 6 volt trickle charger.
Not full power, just trickle. It should come up. If not change the
battery and hope nothing is fryed.

Whut the others said I grantee ya its not the first 6V N where the polarity was reversed most all have no issues after its been done..
I would put it back do what is needed to positive ground...

Contrary to belief I have seen a completely dead battery reversed charged by mistake on a late model car I installed a new battery they drove off with no issues... They drove it to the shop
   Maybe a once in a lifetime event don't try this at home....

I don't have 6v batteries. However I have seen
electric wheelchairs 24v using two 12v batteries and
one 12v will have reverse polarity. This is caused
by one of the 12v is on it way out. When wheelchair
is being used, the weak battery goes to 0v. Then the
better battery still pushes electrons through it
reversing its polarity.

Yes you can recharge it and the correct polarity
comes back, but in the case of the wheelchair it's
time to replace both batteries.

I would charge your 6v with a small 6v manual
charger. Slow charging seems to work better for me.

Thanks for the replies. He apparently had been us using it like this for awhile with no issues. I found it when my trickle charger was blowing fuses. I didn't know that the generator would work like that, but I guess it will. I just don't know what will happen when I try to change it back to positive ground
