Opinions on a JD 3010 Gas

We used one for several years, cutting hay mostly, it was the cheapest running gas tractor I ever owned for it's size, burn less than 4 GPH hooked to an 8 foot disc mower at 540 rpm, 3rd gear. I sold it because I am not much of a fan of JD syncro tractors and because along about 2013 anything with aired up tires was bringing big prices. It would have to be cheap now before I'd think about it, good tires and running/driving good about 2000 max is all I would pay.

I started on gas because I couldn't afford diesel. Once I got one I never looked back. I had a 4010 and 20. Same line of engineering. Good stout workhorses. Amazed at what some sellers think they're worth. Personally, unless you need the gas because of weather conditions and want to put up with it, I'd pass. When I had gas it was always this and that that needed attention. Diesels just run when you ask them and pull when you say go.

Myself I would not want a Waterloo built gasoline engine. Check for good operation of hyd system at operating temp(200°) & operation of pto. Be sure rear pto stub shaft bolts are tight. I'll also advise to check condition & PH of anti-freeze.

For heavier use, gas engines seem costly to own these days.

In winter and just light stuff, not so much of an issue.

Can't say about a 3010 but we had a 3020 gas, worse tractor we ever had, I would get a diesel if possible and the synchro range, ours had the 8 speed power shift hated that as well.

(quoted from post at 07:49:40 11/07/18) Got a little more information it needs rims, sellers says 2nd and 5th gear are 'out' whatever that means.

No 2nd & 5th gear could be slack in shift mechanism or tractor requiring a spit. I'd Run not walk away.

There are better mechanically tractors out there in that year and power class, IH 706 for one. Gas engine sleeve kits were gone for a while, but I think somebody is now making them again (isn't Clevite or Federal Mogul, but beggars can't be choosers). The closed center hydraulic system is where JD had everybody in that era spanked, and if you need a higher capacity system for a loader then it might the better choice. If it has the Aluminum Marvel Schebler carb on it still, you are going to have carb issues, and the repop copy of the cast iron Zenith is not cheap. Hopefully one of the JD guys will chime in but if the synchro's are out it is a pricey and PITA job to repair, if you're lucky it may just be the linkage.

No 2nd and 5th means bottom shaft trans issues. To fix you need to split and also remove axles and pinion from trans. case. PTO was not great on 10 series and the Marvel carbs are not very good as well. I would not consider it unless bought cheap to be used as a parts tractor. Here in the midwest a good 3020 gas can be bought for about $2500-3500 with everything good mechanically. Tom

I spent a lot of time on a 3020 gas. Never had any trouble with it, and it always did what we asked of it. It was our main chore tractor, as well as doing the planting in the spring and in the fall it was honored to wear a John Deere 227 corn picker. We also had a 4020 diesel. The 3020 was NOT a 4020, but we knew that and did not expect the same performance from the 3020.

Looks like a no go for me,seller wants $2K,only reason I was looking at was it had a narrow front thought it was a good looking tractor.Plenty more tractors for sale around.

There is a narrow front Case 630 coming up at an end of the year auction, I want it bad, just like the look of it, plus I like all the 30 series cases.

$2k with a blowed out tranny! You must be in my neck of the woods, same exact seller mentality, every piece of scrap iron is a diamond to them.

But you point out the biggest factor in buying used trators of this size: What are your other options?

In my area, they are few and far between. I had to shake the bushes, the trees, and the tall grass to flush out even a decent option when I was in the market. Everything that came up for sale looked like busted @ss and guys still wanted $$$$$$$ for it.

Yep, I'd move on if you have lots of better options.

There are about a half dozen consignment sales coming up in the next few weeks within 100 or so miles of my place,I don't need another tractor just liked the looks of that one.Have bought 3 tractors in the last month probably the best buy seems to be the Long/Landini FR9500 Special 98 HP 354 Perkins everything seems to work OK not pretty but runs like a top for $900.
