Just purchased a Ford 4500 Industrial Tractor not sure year? I think 1970. When driving after warms up I have a problem with Forward and Reverse. It has 4
speed between legs and on left of steering wheel the forward and reverse. I made sure the fluid is full. Once I let it cool down it starts up and works fine.
Then repeats each time it is driven and warms up. I don't know what to check out first.
I was told that the transmission was re-done a few years back. Not sure where to start? Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Steve

The transmission is heated/cooled by an intercooler in the radiator. You should have a transmission overheat light that "test lights" on starting the engine. There is a pressure check fitting, on the end of a tube, accessed by the plate covering the bottom of the torque converter (don't remember the correct pressure). Sometimes just changing the filter can work wonders.

This site sell a re-print of the industrial tractor service manual (the AG tractor version does not cover the torque converter/power reverser transmission). What are you using for fluid? Some of the Cheap Charlie fluids are not viscosity stable when they get hot. Testing pressures first is the best way as repairs to most of the transmission components will mean splitting the tractor. My guess from your symptoms is a worn charge pump.

I just replaced the 4x4 transmission in my 1971 4500 with a manual 6x2 transmission out of a Ford 3000 ag tractor. For what I'm going to use it for I don't need the shuttle.

Sure hope the shuttle doesn't need to be replaced. I will check all and let everyone know what I find. Thanks, Steve

Multi G-134 oil. I was told to use this. It wasn't cheap. Do you recommend something different?? Thanks for your input. Steve
