520 oil in transmission

Good morning guys,
I have a very nice 520 John Deere, have had for a few years. Recently it started losing oil, each time I would check it, the oil was low.
Then I check the transmission fluid and it was way over full. The engine oil is somehow getting into the transmission fluid. First, what is causing this? Second, how do I go about repairing this? I checked the ventilation pump, oil in the air filter, etc. that all seems to be fine. I am not a mechanic by any means, but would like to try and repair this myself.
Thanks.

You need to replace the pulley side main bearing seal, part # AB5160R. You'll need to remove the pulley and I'm pretty sure the first reduction cover to access the seal.

Thanks, does that mean I will have to take out a crankshaft bearing? Is removing the pulley a hard task, or can an amateur do that?
I have replaced the clutch pads, but that is about all.

You should have a manual. Depends on your mechanical ability whether or not you need to pull and main bearing. Is easier with the bearing removed.

Thanks for the information. I have the manual and will do some searching on that. Do I understand that it can be done without removing the main crankshaft bearing? Thanks.

You need a good puller to get the drive disk off the crank. Getting the old seal out is a little tricky, but the hardest part will be installing the new seal straight and square with bearing in place.

jdfamily,

Get a parts manual and look for the live PTO shaft seal in back of the first reduction gear cover. I believe that engine oil in the transmission must go through this seal to get there. If I remember, the clutch side "seal" is actually an oil slinger?

On the 2 Cylinder Waterloo Deere engines when the engine oil is going into the transmission it is usually caused by too much clearance in the right main bearing of the crankshaft.
