LED Light Bulbs

Thought that some of you fellows that have put LED bulbs in you tractors might be able to give me some advice. Bought some SMD LED bulbs to replace the 1157s in the tail lights of my 1966 Impala. $1 each, on Ebay. Put the 1st one in, and it didn't light. Tried all ten that I had bought, and none lit. Contacted the seller, and was issued a refund, with no problem. Thinking the seller may have known they wouldn't work. Hooked one up to the car battery, with some jumper wires, and it lit! I have read that LEDs have to have the juice running through them in the correct direction. Could these have been constructed backwards?

I was going to ask the same kind of question. Some of the LED replacements now are non directional. With bulbs like the 194 bulbs you just flip them around. One is a pain, all 10 of them you are doing something wrong.

If the regular bulbs would light, the LED should. A turn signal might not light with an led with a standard flasher that depends on load to heat and blink. Jim

Remember on 1157 the shell is ground and one of 2 tips out of bottom is tail and the other is brake/turn, the shell is ground to both, if they light by powering the 2 tips they are wired wrong internally. This if my memory is correct

My Farmall BN still has the original POS ground and 6Volt generator and cut out. Can I get LED bulbs to work on 6 Volt POS ground? What about the high output generator setting that is automatically in with either bright or dim headlight switch setting? Will my generator "over charge" since the LED bulbs draw much less current than the standard bulbs? I have 2 headlights and a rear work like so that's three times less current.

Or all of them are defective. Need a meter to check what you are plugging them into. Can get more involved. My head is starting to hurt.

Probably would charge more than desired. To fix that issue, the generator output can be adjusted by moving the third brush farther away from the fised brush. Charging voltage would be OK at 6.7 to 7 volts with the LED lights turned on. I think you can find them with some research. Jim

LED elites only work one way unlike incandescent bulbs. You will have to rewire your lites in order for them to work. Just switch the wires around. I seriously doubt that there was anything wrong with those lites.

I have them in my 97 GMC pickup and they work fine. They have been on truck for over 10 years with no problems. The only thing wrong with LED taillights is that they won't melt of snow on lens in winter.

A guy gave me some red LED marker lights. He said he dug them out of the trash at work, they were wired backwards and would not work till I reversed the wires. They work great as tail light on the golf cart.

Agreed,

It will require twice the LED's to produce light if it works with either polarity.

AC will have a full wave bridge, so polarity does not matter.

Was 84 when the Farmall H was traded off. That said we never used the lights but it stayed on the high charge at all times with never a problem overcharging. And this was in field work, not just playing around.

Because there are only three connections, they are able to light when power is applied to both contacts and not the base. it takes more volts to get them bright, and they will not be as bright as they were independently due to the resistance of the brake light being lower than the tail light filament. Jim

Stieners sells LED replacement bulbs for the factory lights. Just put a set in my M and they work great, but I lost the high/low function. I'm guessing because they are such a low draw.
