Burning Bulrushes

Or some call them cat tails. This little creek used to be workable farm land but the past decade of wet weather had it too wet to even drive
across. This dry summer changed that and I was able to cut a lot of it with the swather but then needed to burn it off. Finally got a quiet
day for a controlled burn. Used the 2090 Case to work fire guards. It went well.

I wish more folks around us were as conscientious as you are when they burn. Far too many start their fires and leave, and some don't even make fire breaks.

As for wind, seems they like when there's a bit of wind. :(

Its true the fire burns better with some wind to carry it but I don't want to risk it getting away. Dad taught us respect for fire many years
ago. I've seen what can happen when it gets away. Got some video from about 1992 when a neighbour's fire got away in a big wind storm and it
ran across one of my fields in the spring. It took everything out including green trees. We actually had a fire ban here in August-September
due to dry conditions.

Sure as hekkk wish the idiots in calyforn would learn what a control burn is and how to thin out woods, under growth, thick field vegitation, etc. The tree hug crowd. Also the polotisons who agree with them . How many thousands of square miles got tourched this year? How many homes businesses, farms, water shed were lost cause of sheer stupidity. Then the govemint gets there finger up you know where with the fire plane companys. Now there are not enough planes to even begin to fight a fire. Next thing they try is an EX 747. Big and carrys a big load of water. It can't hit the broad side of an entire farm never mind the barn door. Way to fast and unstable. They wallow trying to stay slow enough but then are right on the edge of stalling due to the loads and convection currents. The C-130 is not much better. Nothing can pick up water from a lake like the older planes could. I got into a very lively conversation with an old timmer forest service guy last Sunday about all of this stuff. We were both jumping up and down.

Nice, glad you are able to reclaim some lost ground. Saskatchewan farming is so much different then what I am used to. My mother used to talk of them sometimes losing ground to growing sloughs, but most of her stories where of the drought of the 30?s.

Here in NH if you let too many cattails get a foothold on your ground it gets reclassified as wetlands. Once that happens you can't use it without a permit, which requires inspections and use plan, etc. etc.

Thank goodness we have a little more common sense and freedom to farm here. If we pay taxes on the land, we get to farm it.
That pic I posted created a bit of controversy in a facebook group last night and ended up getting deleted by moderators. Seems that some see us farmers as destroyers of wildlife habitat. True in some cases but don't paint me with the same brush. I have many acres of wildlife habitat on my land. Way more than most.

I am in California. I remember back in the late '50's when smog got to be a problem they shut down all burning. Later they learned it was caused by cars. NoW we have predictable burn days when atmospheric conditions are favorable for burning. Now we are encouraged to burn for fuel reduction. Where
I live after fire season is over we don't need a permit to burn. Just call the burn day number and burn. Now all we need is the public agencies to get behind controlled burns. They are having one now. Thinking more logging is going to solve the problem is crazy. There is limited market for timber and loggers are known for leaving a mess behind.

I?ve seen your pics in tg last, you have lots 9f wildlife habitat!

Here in ?Minnesota the Twin C8ty folk get to run the state, and they have figured out they can do anything that want to us dumb farmers.
Cattails are the same as an endangered spiders here, about throw you in jail if you try to work ground one is growing 9n.

The governor has taken 150-300,000 acres of land away from farmers with zero compensation, with his buffer law.

Getting pretty sad in the land of the free.

Good video, looks like you will be able to farm right through that low spot next year.
But I was disappointed that you didn't forget the tools on the front tractor tire at the beginning, and then run over them. That's how I would have done it. LOL

Been there and done that way too many times. I also lost a good grease gun the day before while disking. The tall bulrushes much have hit the release catch on the holder that carries the grease gun and it fell off. I drove around looking for a bit with no luck . Likely buried in trash behind the disker.

Is it true that in california they won't let you clean out the under brush. So when they have a fire the under brush feeds the fire. Is this true or not.

Cal fire is somewhat sensitive to having their people burned and killed fighting the fires so the gov't wants to reduce fuel, but a lot of the volatile fuel brush is green and blooms in the spring so the people that have the houses built in the canyons won't stand for having it removed. They are willing to play the odds just like the people that won't wear seatbelts and the people on the seacoast who rode out the storm and are still missing.

(quoted from post at 07:38:02 10/31/18) Are you from Sask? Me too. I have been reclaiming sloughs since 2014. Got 130 acres back in production
Yes, Saskatchewan here and most of the area has been reclaiming a lot of lost farm land caused by the past 8 years of above normal precipitation. Now we are going the other way. Too dry.
