Diesel S-10

Built another diesel s-10 chevy..68 hp deere turbo engine with an Isuzu 5 speed trans. 15" tires. engine runs 3000 rpm with 15 lbs boost. 41mpg at 70 mph..will run 80 mph..Turned up some. Air, ps,pb. Fun thing to drive. 34 mpg around town leaving runing with ac on.

It is. the first one I built had a smaller engine with a 4 speed. Power nothin. Gets 50 mpg and still running great. 75000 miles and he just changes oil and filter. has done nothing to it. It had 3789 hrs on it when I put it in.. this one has 4700 hrs. on it...

That is a neat thing to do. A very good friend ran the little Diesel Luv pickups in the 1980s. He got 40-50 MPG.

Yes, a friend has one. This one will run off and hide from his. I have 1 more of this engine and he wants it but his truck is pretty ragged. He's looking for another one.The drive shaft from the chevy will fir right in the isuzu trans..

SO sad Detroit can't offer a basic vehicle like this due to emissions regulations brought on by the "tree huggers"!

Don't know for sure. I've had it in the shed for several years waiting to find a p-up. I will look tomorrow and get back to you.

Well the ones sold by "Detroit" ( GM ) in the late 70's and 80's were pure JUNK ! so I'm glad they can't make them anymore.

A pickup built by Isuzu. My neighbor used to have a diesel version, bragged that it was the BEEESSSTTT pickup in the world. Until he bought something else.

I had a Ford ranger pickup with a factory Isuzu Diesel engine. Chevy Colorado pickup has a diesel option. 2019 Silverado can be ordered with a diesel.

Pound for Pound one of the best trucks I ever owned was a 84 GMC S-15 with an Isuzu Diesel. Wish I could buy another

Great job, waiting for the photos. I worked with a guy that was doing the re-power thing back in the 80's. He put a 350 Olds in a little Toyota PU, with a 350 auto trans. He could nail it from a dead stop and it would just spin and shift thru the gears w/o hardly moving. He also built some awesome dune buggies.....very talented guy. He is near 80 & still doing his thing. He most recently did a JD 50, dual exhaust, Holley carb, did the cam (he's a machinist), put Cat pistons, & all kinds of little tricks. It just sets in his shop, out of the way. I stop by every now and then just to get him to start it and hear it run. He's not a farmer, lives on one ac. and has no use for the tractor, just did it cause he could.

Back in the mid-80's I worked for a trucking company that had a few of the VW Rabbit diesel pick ups for parts chasing/odd and ends. Wouldn't get out of their own way but would go forever on a cup of fuel. Pretty dependable too, if I remember correctly. I remember the boss' son used to complain about having to "choke" the one he drove on cold mornings. Ignition retarder. Yes, he was brilliant.

(quoted from post at 16:23:37 10/24/18) I thought the Rangers (and escorts and tempos) had a Mazda diesel from the factory.

Yes, they did. Mazda diesels. I had one in a Tempo. 40 to 45 MPG. Just don't get in a hurry.

So sad that WE can't have them here in the USA. Detroit has been building diesel powered vehicles for export to other countries for a long time. They are popular in Europe. OUR "tree huggers" won't allow them to be sold here.

The Rabbit Diesel trucks wer built at the Westmoreland plant in Pennsylvania. This is the only plant they were built at. Know a guy who still has one in tan color.

Mine was a Isuzu. Think it was a 1984 model. Over the years i?ve Had several people call wanting to track it down. Must be pretty rare.

Sadly those were the non turbo 64 and 70 hp engines.. Couldnt pull the hat off your head... I had to turn off the ac to pass someone. LATER the vw turbo diesels ran like a bat out of helK. but the little truck was gone by them... Even though Mexico and other counties got the little turbo diesel pickup we sadly did not. Would by one today if I could. I do have and have had 8 of the vw turbo charged jettas and a couple of diesel passat's including the 2015. 42 to 54 mpg, with a lifetime average of 43.5 on my current "medium sized" passat.

Are you SURE that your diesel engine in Ford Ranger wasn't a Perkins-made or Mitsubishi-made engine? I don't think the Ford Ranger jumped into bed with Isuzu back then.
There are some Chevy Chevettes with an Isuzu engine. Matter-of-fact, I got one sitting in my shed.

The Tempo and Topaz had a Mazda-built diesel engine option. There's a complete one sitting in a hedge-row about a mile from me.
Part are hard to find, but it's rumored that Mazda has a few leftover parts for them and I've heard of this engine being used on semi refers.

The 83-84 models were 2.2L Mazda/Perkins diesels, the 85-86 2.3 diesels were Mitsubishi's.

A cousin had a 80 model Chevy Luv with the diesel engine, not much power but it averaged 53 mpg.
Looking forward to seeing pics, did you make the adapter plate?
I have a Ford Super Duty I swapped a 5.9 Cummins into using the Ford ZF6 trans, makes a nice dependable truck.
A small pickup with a turbo diesel would be a fun truck to have but I'd prefer something with a mechanical injection pump.
