USDA Office

I had a nice week in Portland/Scarborough Maine.

I saw an interesting thing, there was a USDA field office in South Portland, almost stopped in and asked them what the local crops are.

Any ideas?

They raise a lot of different crops in
Maine according to Google. Along with eggs,
dairy and aquaculture.

That area, there are a few beef, might be some dairy yet. Biggest thing is market garden type crops. Plenty of market for them.

More "commercial ag" is in the central and northern part of the state. Dairy and potatoes are the mainstays. Several large egg farms. Blueberries "Down East". Also cranberries, apples, small grains, corn...

The greater Portland area isn't a very good representation of what the rest of the state is like.

Keep in mind most counties have a USDA office. Maine only has 16 counties, how many does your state have?

Potatoes are a major part of Maine agriculture. In "the county" which is what they call Aroostook county, in Maine you can drive for 60 miles on route one and see little more than potato fields and barns. My buddies and I do a lot of snowmobiling up there. There are some old tractors and farm equipment to be seen here and there along the trails.

That's comforting!

Had an uncle and aunt up in Lewiston ME Farmed potatoes and beans. Potatoes were sold to a Maine potato chip company called Humpty Dumpty, and the beans (I think are navy beans) and went to B and M (Brown and Morrel?) in Portland.
