My neighbor across the street from me just put his house for sale, for 1,535,000. Doesn't mean he will get that much. I purchased my lot where my house is for 7,500 , my house cost around 35,000. This was back in the 70's. How times have changed. I have my tractors next to the house that is for sale. I hope if he sells, I wouldn't get someone who doesn't like to see or hear my tractors. The house for sale is between my house, and my tractors, and shop. I tell people if I would have purchased land back when I got out of high school in 1960, instead of motorcycles, and old cars I could be wealthy today. Money isn't everything. Stan
.

It's getting crowded around my farm too. When my folks purchased this place in 1959 we lived a long way out in the country. Now my farm is rubbing the city limits of town of 75,000.
I just hope they stay back for a few more years. I'm 65 but would like to farm for a while yet. Like Pa said "It's just getting fun"

Paul Allen (recently deceased) told me that he and a partner were going to make computers. True. I met him in Seattle many moons ago.

Around growing suburbs it's popular to complain about the new neighbors, then sell out to a developer for a truckload of money that buys 5 to ten times as much farmland two counties out of the metro area. It's a tough problem that most farmers would envy, LOL.

sounds like you are wealthy , like most people they work to pay there home off and have a ton of equity, you cant take equity with you when you die there for you need to have your home work for you instead of you working for it .

Moms house cost $18,500.00 in 1972,I think it will bring $100,000.00. That is in a town of 550.

1.5M is a good price to me. No way I could even come close to affording it, but a very nice price. The wife and I are living on a 20 acre section her parents picked up back in the early 70's. BLM land on two sides and Long View Fiber Company on the other two sides. Everyone growing trees and the closest neighbor is about 1/2 mile away, next one is about 3/4 mile in the opposite direction. One day the wife say's 'sell' and next day is 'stay'. Downtown Portland is about 30 minutes away and the closest gas station is 10 miles. Closest mini store is about 5 miles.
One one hand the Cali immigrants are a pita but hopefully one day, God willing, Two of them show up with a need to prove something and too much money. Living in the middle of the forest, no neighbors on 4 sides, Paved road, weekly trash service, currently 2.5M for a start. The wife say's I am nuts, but I am not the one paying 1.5 to have neighbors.
The current structure on this lot is a 1999 double wide band aid can, as I like to call it, good for removal when the next owner builds his McMansion. So 1.5M is a good start as far as I can tell.

OK, so you take advantage of your so-called "equity." By taking out a LOAN against it. Now your home is not paid off anymore!

...and this is so you can do, WHAT? Play the stock market? Invest in some Ponzi scheme?

Nothing worse than being retired and have a big house payment I would think,a paid off home is about the best investment anyone can make in my opinion.Having 2 or more is even better
because of the rental income.

They told me that money is like toilet paper. Having a lot probably wouldn't make me any happier, but I don't want to run out.

But that $18,500 was gold backed dollars. Nixon took us off the gold standard somewhere around June 1974. The price of every single input went nuts in July 1974 and the price of milk actually went down. Today's million probably won't buy any more product (if as much).
