Wont Start !

Guys I think i will need the computer wizzes for this one ? My 2008 Gran Marquis started then quit when i set it in gear today . now ,all it will do is crank and crank. So .i pushed the inertia button in the trunk ? cycled key on and off i could here the fuel pump cycle on /off . NO GO.popped the breather gave it a dose of ethter..wiped the keys and the fob .. tried other set of keys, crank but NO Go. wiped them down, no go, CCOULD this be related?... .yesterday a odd thing happened in the parade at Laconia Days to this otherwise VERY DEPENDABLE car. the temp guage went up while idling thru the parade route, then steam came out under hood, SHUT DOWN .came back 2 hours later , added 1 and half gallon water. no leaks ,good belt tension . made 3 errand trips after that including creek crossing for electric fence repair(prompting inertia button suspician ) , went to church , over hundred miles total. temp guage fine , everything ran normal

Is there spark? Pull a coil and put a grounded plug in the boot. Have someone check if it is firing. If not, electrical, if yes, fuel. At least it is a place to start. Jim

if you ethered it and no pop my guess is a crank sensor , also that coolant went somewhere just my guess

Even though it won't start, run the codes.

It may have set a code when the ignition was turned on, even though it didn't start.

I'll second the crank sensor, but best scan it before changing any parts or unplugging anything.

Check on the fuel pump driver solenoid,,that has been a common issue,,most auto parts stores stock them,,yours may be under the hood in a box with 2 other relays,,it can also blow a fuse when it fails...just some thing to check...

just drove about 6 miles this A M with the MARQuis, She Run out fine, like nothing was ever wrong ,.I disconnected the battery last nite andd hooked it back up this A M. cranked it over and it instantly sputter fired but No Start... , stopped cranking , turned off key, counted to 5 ,turned key to on ,,,,heard fuel pump kikoff , then cranked engine and it started as if it were flooded , but immediately cleared out ,and idled normal .. this car is made to use ethanol ,i cant always get to the ethanol station and occassionally i will switch to e-85, i wonder if the change in fuels is giving the computer fits of confusion .Yesterday it was Extremely wet Everywhere and the Car stays in the weather. When I 1st got the MarQ, she needed a couple coil paks, and i added shutter no more to the tranny, and it has been dependable trouble free all year .

Best to try to diagnose it while it is acting up.
The ether proves it is probably NOT fuel. Hearing the fuel pump run confirms this.

My first suspicion would be crank position sensor. If the car would crank but not fire, that would definitely set a code. Second suspicion would be cam position sensor. That would even be more likely since sometimes it start, sometimes not. Cam position failure means that the computer would have to "guess" whether cylinders were on compression or exhaust stroke. This gives a 50% chance of starting or not starting when you try it. Failure of this sensor would also set a trouble code.

You did not mention if the "check engine" light is on. If it is on, it will definitely have a stored code in the system.
