Recently posted a guy had his new Polaris stolen. Thieves cut cable and drove it away. Cops had a search warrant and found his Polaris along with many other stolen items, many guns. The Polaris had a key in it. Owner has both original keys.

So the big questions is, where do you think the third key come from?

Dave,
I have the same question, are keys all the same like many lawn mowers?
I was hoping the brain trust on YT could answer that question.

If they cut the cable and drove it away, then the key is probably universal. They would need some time to pull and replace the key switch, and the forethought to have brought one with them.

There is a universal key that fits at least 90% of older mowers same key fits some AC tractors like the 190XT I had. Also older AC keys like used in the D series will fit may Oliver tractors.

All 3 of my rangers and the 4 wheeler have different keys. We even have a special speed key for one that limits it to 25mph for the kids.

Drive by a Schneider, JB Hunt, or walmart yard full of freightliners. Might need a dozen keys to open every truck on the lot.

I unlocked a guy's century with my Chevy pick-up key when he locked his key in sitting on a fuel island. At Schneider there was several trucks I used the key for my 96 Plymouth to run them.

I was at an equipment auction once and they sold several sets of keys to start about anything. Cat, Komatsu, Kubota, JD.

Service guys lost the key to my Ford 1520 many years ago. When I complained they reached in a drawer and pulled out another key. Didn't even look the original. The keys were all the same.

I own a 2016 Ranger there are a number of "sets" of keys for them, they are Not all the same,, who knows maybe the thieves had a "friend" at a dealer who got them a set of the different ones

Keys are not hard to come by and some keys will work on anything , case in point there , back in my younger days working at car dealerships we could cut the key from the code book . Or like the keys for my 71 Duster 340 it had the KEY and if it was a Mo Par that key set would open any mopar that used that key style . I was the parts manager for this large new Chrysler Plymouth dealership . We had a shell we say influencel customer of some higher ranking (so he thought ) drop his car off one morning before any of us got there had a typed up three page list of things needing done on the dash parked almost up against the main door and did not leave the keys in the drop box . We could not pop the locks since he had the buttons changed . wwe tried to call him left message and got not returns . They guys in the service dept were down to tryen every key from every car on the lot , next they were getting the demo keys off us that had demo's They tried everything , all but the keys to my personal car that was setting at home but the keys were in my pocket . Service manager told me to call one of the towing companys to come drag this THING away from the door and i said hey lets try my Duster keys . Got the key out and stuffed it in the door lock and we were in . I put the key in the ing. and fired this Chrysler up and drove it in the building . we then started tryen my Duster key in everything and it opened and started every car on the lot . . Now as for tractors and equipment each Mfg has there own key that fits everything . From the 450's up to the 86's it's the same key in the I H line up the 100 sires uses the same key that will fit some of the case line up . I have tow large key rings that have a key for every piece of equipment that runs on tire or tracks . As i need them from time to time . When i was driving truck i hauled a lot of heavy equipment ansd many times you went to load something and oh no KEYS , well your there to haul it and it is going on the trailer one way or the other and having the KEYS save time and eliminates the need of explaining what your doing with the cops when you have the KEYS and not half the tool box out with jumper wires going to everything to get them to start and MOVE when it is midnight . Don't ask how i know this .

Hello Geo-TH,In

Here is a master key I made many moons ago. It opened all the locks that took that key. Notice there are no tumblers pins, I ground them off. That is what stops the key from turning. The tip of the key has the pawls that actually actuate -open the lock,

GUIDO.

I had the same thought too. I was there when Ranger was delivered from dealer. Dealer is at the south end of town. Ranger was delivered about 5 miles north of town. Delivery guy drove past many locksmiths and 2 minute key places.

Not saying that's where the key came from. What better way to get a key and address of new Ranger?

NUTTY ..... noticed your post and had to reply. The "Ranger" you own, where did it come from? Up here (and in the US as well from what I read), they haven't been available for a while. A new version is on its way but not for sale yet. Here's a short bit of what Wikipedia has to say ....

"The Ford Ranger is a nameplate that has been used on three distinct model lines of vehicles sold by Ford. Originally used from 1958 to 1960 by the short-lived Edsel division on its base-trim Edsel Ranger model line, the name was adopted between 1965 and 1981 on various versions of the Ford F-Series as a trim line and option package. For the 1983 model year, the Ranger name was given its own model line, becoming a compact pickup truck sold in North America and later, parts of South America. Since 1998, Ford began to use the Ranger nameplate globally. The Ranger was discontinued in the United States and Canada for the 2011 model year,[1] while sales of an updated version continued in international markets throughout the 2012 to 2018 model years. As of the 2019 model year, Ford will resume sales of the Ford Ranger in the United States and Canada."

AFAIK, Polaris does not keep a database like most auto manufacturers to be able to VIN cut keys. So to duplicate a key you either need the old one or have a locksmith do it. I have taken the cylinder/switch assy to a locksmith to have a key cut before.

Did your friends key match the same cut that was in the recovered Polaris? It's possible several different cuts can operate the same cylinder. It wouldn't surprise me if there are only about a dozen different cuts for all of them, maybe less.

The keys I receive in the mail all the time to come see if I won a prize will operate my RTV900 'bota.

Back in '80 I think it was, a Michigan State University student was arrested for automobile theft. The story he gave the police was he had borrowed the F-150 Econoline van from his room mate. Police weren't having that. Took them a few hours to straighten out. Two vans, same color, make, and model.....and the same ignition key. Apparently back in the day keys for Ford trucks only had half a dozen combinations.

Universal fit keys, and getting a new key made at the local hardware store is a thing of the past. About two years ago we accidently locked the doors on our 2012 Silverado with the key still in the ignition switch. The dealer was able to make one for us by downloading the pattern and also the code for the electronic part of it. We were lucky that our 2012 was under a specific serial number. If it had been OVER that serial number, the dealer would have to order the new key from the factory. Needless to say, we now have a spare key. Hidden where no one but us can find it.
