OT windshield scratches

Wiper blade came off on my pickup while it was idling and the arm scratched the windshield. Do you know of a polish or repair that will remove scratch? Thanks.

It can be done but by the time you buy the glass repair kit and supplies it would be cheaper for a detailer or windshield shop to do it for you.

Look around for some cerium oxide.

Have you run your fingernail across it? It's almost certainly pretty deep. You'd have to remove a LOT of glass to get through the scratch.

Leave it or polish it out, you're looking at a weak spot in the windshield where it will be prone to cracking. Probably safest thing to do is have it replaced if you have glass coverage.

Several years ago I had a scratched windshield. I spotted a Safelite mobile van replacing a windshield. Stopped and asked the guy if he could do anything for it. He said he could but I would need to call and make an appointment, then he stopped what he was doing and grabbed his polisher and a couple of bottles of compound and knocked it out in less than 10 minutes. 90% of the scratches were gone and I could easily live with the rest. I gave him a $20 for his trouble, we were both happy.

Just go get the finest steel wool you can buy, triple 000 or something like that, its fine like hair,, wear a pair of rubber gloves and get to work, it will SHINE like a new one when you are done,, I have used it to buff welding pits to where you cant hardly see them, also works great on a gravel blasted one
cnt

A rubbing compound called "Jeweller's rouge" will help buff out scratches. I like the suggestion of fine steel wool first, then buff with the rouge. This is all contingent upon how deeply the scratch is. Most auto glass places can buff out scratches

Before you spend a dime or elbow grease on it check with your insurance provider. My insurance company will replace any damaged windshield under the comprehensive policy with no deductible, I just had the one in my truck replaced because after 200,000 miles it was bad enough that it impaired vision,my cost was zero.

Years ago that happened to the wife's mini van. I took it to the local glass company and asked if they could polish it out. They didn't seem to think they could ? but I said just try it. They did and it turned out very good !

If you have comprehensive coverage you have glass coverage. Question is whether or not you have a deductible. Some policies carry a ded
and some don't. A lot of folks with older vehicles have given up their collision coverage but kept comp which covers fire, theft, wind,
flood and most anything not considered collision. Even if you hit a deer it is covered under comp. Speaking from 47 years adjusting all
kinds of insurance claims.

Glass is HARD and BRITTLE. Chances are that the scratches are from metal deposited from the wiper arm as much as any scratching of the glass. Unless it sat and scraped on the glass for an extended period of time (like MONTHS), the scratching will most likely be very light and will polish out easily.
