4555 pto brake always on

Hi we have a John deere 4555 powershift mfwd and it seems like the pto brake is always engaged when the pto is off . Like even when the tractor is shut off ,I can't turn it. Is this normal on these tractors?

Yes, that is normal. The pto brake is applied with spring pressure and released with hydraulic pressure when the pto is engaged.

. So basically the only way to turn an implement by hand is to disconnect the pto then?

There is a wide space in the splines of the PTO brake that will let you rock the shaft left or right a bit to help line up the implement..
