Harbor Freight o-ring kit

I had a harbor freight o ring kit,
after about 4 years the o rings in the
kit were dry and cracked, glad I only
used a couple for non critical uses
anyhow. Also many had significant
flash and parting lines which can lead
to leaks in high pressure
applications. For hydraulics you need
specific of ring kits anyhow, most
standard o ring kits don't have them,
there specific kits for boss o rings,
o ring face couplings, cat flange,
code 61 and 62 flange, din fittings,
and metric boss o ring ports.

I know a lot of people who go there and buy tons of stuff. They tell me great things about Harbor Freight. The problem with me I must not be normal because every I have got from them is not so great. The tools will break or give in do to stress, there grinders burn out just right after the warrantee goes. You might say I guess it is just me. For some strange reason I must always get the bad stuff out of that place. So Harbor freight is not a good place for me.

harbor freight is a good place to stay away from,,it is all China junk,,even the "Worst" of China junk,,the o-rings are poor quality, just like the rest of the inventory..I know this from seeing people around me trying them out....good for one or two times of use...

just posted on IH board about using their O rings on the oil cooler of my 560D. Less than 100 hours later I had to redo job and O rings were hard and brittle. They say they are oil resistant but apparently not heat resistant. I have used some others from the kit for hydraulic valves on 560 and they seem to seap also. I have gotten some good stuff from Harbor Freight but this O ring kit wasn't one of them.

I have had good and bad from them. I look at them as a great place to buy a tool instead of looking to borrow it because you know that you probably won't use it again in two years. If it is something that you will use a lot and wear out HF is not your best option.

(quoted from post at 21:23:13 10/14/18) Working on hydraulics, anyone have luck with the Harbor Freight o-ring kit?

Some of the rubber products I've used from HF seemed pretty old when I got them. In the case of o-rings, I'd be worried about dry rot.

Rubber is one of those things that is impossible to tell from looking at it.

Something about cheap rubber products that makes them very short lived.

I'm seeing it with tires and tubes, hoses, and I'm sure orings aren't immune. I recently bought a set of acetylene hoses from Ebay that rotted away in a year!

For the cost difference verses the problems they could cause, I think I would stick with the name brand orings.

The problem I?ve found with any cheap o ring kit is
the sizes in the kits do not fit on most applications
on equipment to big to thick and just not enough
sizes

I bought a kit from my local hydraulic shop. He showed me his stacks of kits and told me that it is still only about a 50-50 shot that he has the one that he needs at the moment.

And China is the land of "Almost right"....if we do quit trading with them it will be for the better,,China has filled this country up with poorly made copies of our original parts...

You?re right on that .. I bought a John Deere o ring kit years ago when they were still ?cheap? I wonder if a guy can buy a decent kit with sizes that will actually work somewhere for less than 700$

I also have used them for years and hve had no problems. If you buy a kit, get both kits. They have them in a Red Box SAE and a Blue Box Metric.
