Posted this on JD Board but thought it wouldn't hurt here either. Hopefully, JD Seller and others will see it and respond in one or the other places. There is a JD 3140 4wd with loader nearby that I am going to look at tomorrow. Any advice on this model or what things I should look for would be appreciated. I understand it's German built, 97-100 hp, cat II and that's about all I know at this point. Any comments or advice will be appreciated. Thanks!

Rated at 85 hp on the pto, 359 cid 6 cylinder, 8 speed standard, optional hi lo gives you 16. Independent 540/ 1000 pto. Dry clutch wet brakes. A good tractor if well ,maintained like any other. Preceded by the 3130, followed by the 2950, here in Canada at least. Do a coolant test as with any wet sleeve engine, check rear end oil for debris. A good one will command at least 15 percent more $ than it's competitors.

Well the JD 2840 is a model I run from anymore. They where a pretty good tractor when new. The trouble is they can have lots of hydraulic issues that added together can cost more to repair than the tractor would ever be worth. Great motor. Weak clutch as they had a dry clutch and loader work would eat a clutch every 2500-3000 hours. HI-Lo works good but if anyone ever tried to pull start it the clutch pack housing is usually junk. 20 years ago it as getting hard to find good Hi-LO clutch pack housings used and new was expensive.

This one with 4wd and a loader would throw red flags all around for me.

I know of fellows with the JD 2840s and later JD 2950s with tens of thousands of hours on them. I also know fellows that have spent $5-10K on them to get the hydraulic issues repaired. So unless the thing has had prove able light use I would look for a different model.
