Potato digger

This is my potato digger. I plant with the center buster blade, then swap it for this flat plate shovel. I go up and back down the row twice. Best part is it takes up almost no room.

A 1/4? steel plate. Notched to fit around the bar shank. It plants and digs. My next step is to get some wedge shaped pieces welded one each side and some steel rods maybe, to allow soil to sift thru and potatoes stay on top. The soil was so wet yesterday that those improvements wouldn?t have made any difference.

I put the rods too close together on mine. The dirt doesn't sift through them like I wish it would. Also I used 7/8" diameter rods because I had a lot of 7/8" round stock. The rods are too big - they work better if they are small enough to vibrate a little - it helps them sift. I had an old friend who had a horse drawn digger, and the rods on his digger were about 3/8" diameter and about 30" long. It sifted the potatoes real good.

Nice job on your digger - it saves a lot of work!

I am on the hunt for one that works like yours Dan,, got half of mine dug before the storm hit, but only about 6 feet of a row of carrots out so far, but I did get the onions all out

Tom, you got a lot more out then I do, all my potatoes are basically still in the meadow, and carrots. We got rain and snow, and it keeps on. Hopefully soon I can get at them.
Looks like you had a nice crop there.

I have one that bolts on a shank like your plow has. It is buried under ten years of "stuff" So the picture is one that is kind of like it.

Thanks I am Very picky about keeping it that way too,, digging with it that way is night and day different than a rusty one,, a good friend taught me that years ago, I also sharpened it when I bought it new to make sure the edge on it sharpens as you use it,, you can about shave with it lol

Ground crops did ok Dan even with four Pounding hails hitting it hard,, onions are smaller than my norm but I am glad for what i got spuds and carrots really grew nice sized though hope you get a bit of warm weather so you can get the rest of yours out,, I have 4-5" of WET snow on things this morning, and we have had rain showers for the last three days
