Someone has a free Farmall Cub that I might get, if I'm not too far down the line.

What do I need to know before I get too far into it? It appears complete but hasn't been run in some time. I'm approaching it as a worst case scenario, complete rebuild, radiator, electrics, etc.

I was given a tractor last summer. Winched it on the trailer and a couple hours latter drove it off under it own power. Yes if did need some work and still does. IH584 Diesel that had caught fire. I had to replace the radiator some hoses and the wiring and battery but it runs none the less and it has a loader on it to boot.

You may find a little TLC and you could have a $1500 tractor for little or nothing in it. I over the years have brought many dead tractor back to life

You should be able to get it running, even if it needs a complete rebuild, and then evaluate whether its worth doing that. Pretty easy (and cheap) to get things running, and certainly worth giving it a try, because free is a very good price.

If it's free what can go wrong? Some gave me a free MF with a loader. All it needed was two complete rear wheels, and tires, two front wheels, and tires. One front spindle. An injection pump. Then pound one piston out from the bottom. The loader ended up in the scrap pile. Other than that it was fairly complete. Stan

I bought a skid steer at an auction once for 150.00. They put it on my trailer for me and we got it home. I went into the house while my son was playing with . 10 mins later I hear it start up. I asked him what he did to it. Put fuel in it and primes the fuel system.

Somebody dropped a Ford 8N off at my place while we were away. I loaded it on my trailer and dropped it off at another guy's place.

About a month ago the wife and I were out for a walk, about a 1/4 mile down the road there was a lawn mower sitting out by the curb with a FREE sign on it! I pushed it home, spent about an hour fixing the few things that were wrong with it, just out of adjustment and neglect, and had it running. Wife loves it, starts easy, self propelled, variable speed!

Its free until you have to do a couple of thousand dollars of repairs. LOL Seriously I picked up a Cub that wouldn't run and had a bad radiator. The tractor needed a valve job and unfortunately the valves are in the block (its a flat head engine) so everything had to come out of the block. Cost me about $1500 but I had new everything when we finished and basically a new engine. When I reinstalled the block 2 of us handled it without any lift. I bought a new radiator that fit well and with $2500 total in it runs great. Problem is its probably worth only about $1500 to resell. On electrical it could be either a mag or distributor depending on age but both are easy to fix if needed. I have a 12 volt alternator on mine - talk about some crazy cranking. If it were me if the tractor engine is free and the tires are decent I would get it for the price.

A free Farmall Cub is one thing, how about the countless number of guys who have taken on an old car project that they got for free and spent years and untold dollars getting it done. And then after many, many thousands of dollars that they don't even want to think about, they have something that they could have found ready to go for 1/3 as much as they spent. But look at all the fun they had .... and arguments with their Missus.

Are the tires any good? Is it sitting outside where it may have gotten water in the engine and froze during winter? A cub engine is a flat head engine. It doesn't have engine cylinder sleeves. It is a little tougher to work one than the larger Farmall's of that era. I have one. I think the best implements for one are cultivators, sickle bar mower, and corn planter.

Do you have use for a Cub? If so parts are readily available and not that expensive. Go to the parts part of this web site and price a rebuild kit.
