O.T. Handgun question.

If it's just for nostalgia, looks, fun, plinking, the Ruger would be the better gun. Just keep in mind, SA will need the hammer pulled back every time to fire. If it's multi-purpose shooting, self defense, backup, carry gun etc I would get the Charter. I would want to hold each gun and shoot them if possible. The ruger should be more comfortable to shoot, especially with .357, its weight is almost twice the charters. The charter will carry easier with its lightweight. I would probably get the charter, mainly shoot .38spc or +p, and keep .357 loaded for defense

I forgot to add, I think the charter only comes in stainless, and the blackhawk is only in blued right? If so this should also be a factor in your purchase. Blued guns look great, but they need to be kept clean, dry and oiled, stainless is much more forgiving, especially if rust, corrosion, wear and maintenance is considered. When the gun gets scratches or rub marks, stainless can simply be buffed and polished too.

The charter arms is a double action gun and Ruger Blackhawk is a single action. The Ruger is a nice single action but if I was going to
double action I would go with a Smith&Wesson model 66 with custom grips for target shooting.

I agree with 4play, if target shooting the Ruger. I have owned a Ruger .44 mag since 1973. It is the most
accurate hand gun that I've ever owned. For self defense, concealed carry the Charter Arms. Rick

Nothing wrong with Charter, they have been making them a long time.
I am a single action fan. But if i wanted a double 357 in a Ruger, I
would look at a Ruger gp100. A little more than the Blackhawk.
Looking at those 2, you must have a budget set. I own a Rossi m971
double/single 357 and an older Ruger blackhawk 357 with fixed
sights. The Rossi is the smoothest action of any of my wheel guns
including my Colts. Very accurate too. Think I paid about 250 for
the rossi used. Both of your choices are going to go bang with every
trigger pull. Just a matter of which fits your hand better and
smoother action. Neither is the best out there, but far from being
the worst. 2 different styles. The Charter will have adjustable
sights, the Blackhawk may or may not depending on year and model.
New model BH is adjustable. Look at warranty on both also.

Charter was good enough for David Berkowitz, but in .44.

That's like asking what is better, a Chevy car or a Ford truck? If you need to pull loaded wagons to town the Chevy car is a poor choice no matter what you think of Fords. If I was looking for a hunting pistol the Ruger would win but it sure wouldn't be my choice for a night stand gun. As the other's said for over all quality the Ruger wins but Charter made a very serviceable gun.

I'm with Butch. I own both Rugers and a Charter. Two very different platforms with different goals in mind and targeting different buyers. I wouldn't be scared of either one. If you plan to do a lot of shooting of full house 357 loads the Ruger will last longer. It's a better hunting gun. If you want to shoot a lot of 38's and do some self defense courses, the Charter will do fine. The Charter is arguably more versatile. The Ruger is much heavier and physically larger. It's going to depend on what you want to do.

(quoted from post at 22:36:45 09/25/18) Charter Arms Target Magnum .357 da/sa Vs. Ruger Black Hawk .357 sa only All around which is the better revovler?

I own a Ruger Gp100 and Ruger Sp101 both in 357 mag. For defense I like the Sp101 better

Just another option to consider

The reason I picked those two is because thats what a local shop has in stock in .357
Currently leaning towards Ruger. Proven design been around a LONG time. Seems to be a well loved design with good resale if I dont like it in say 10 years.

Yes, the Ruger will hold it's value better but it will probably cost more to start with. I am a DA revolver fan, I tolerate my SA revolvers, but I never really warm up to them. If the Ruger will do what you want then go for it. If it's got a shorter barrel, say 4 5/8" it can make a fair carry gun too. But it's a lot larger and heavier than the Charter. It all depends on what you want it for.

The Ruger is a good gun and well made.If you are planning on going a lot of shooting with it my take a Look at the Bisley blackhawk if they
still make it. The only difference is between the Blackhawk and the Bisley Blackhawk is the shape of grip.Myself I like the feel of the bisley grip. Top photo is Bisley and bottom is standard grip.
