Pull start a deisel

I want to see if my 4010 will start from a pull never push started a deisel. I was goin to put it in 6 and pull with crawler and just mash the clutch when it fires. Sound right?

Might work, but 7 or 8 will turn it easier. Sometimes they will slide in the lower gears. 6th is right about at the lower line where it will work good. Of course pulling speed makes a difference too.

Yep, EASY to pull-start.

But WHATEVER you do, NEVER pull that tractor or any "synchro" DEERE for that matter, unless the transmission shift lever is in "TOW" or is in gear so the transmission topshaft is spinning, operating the transmission oil pump.

If towed without the transmission oil pump operating, you'll make it a couple of $$$$$ miles before the transmission locks up.

When I was in high school I worked on a farm and he ran 5 tractors and only one would start with the battery. We started that tractor and pulled the other 4. 7 days a week. I don't know why he wouldn't fix those other tractors.

Had my ford 3000 nosed into a building when the starter went out. Pulled it in reverse, started in less than 10 feet. If the engine is in good condition they will start really easy and yes, keep foot on clutch and release it as soon as you hear it start.

I n The Last 5 yrs or so ,Some of you guys on hear aint never been around a farm .let alone equipment before ..That is odd to me and I am trying hard not to let it , LOL ,Annoy Me .When I was in Grade School ,We parked Everything on the hill and rolled it and dumped the Clutch and away We would Go , If the motor has a lot of wear , You better "make sure You park in in EXTRA LOW dad Would Say '. You Can Pull start Case -O Matics by Getting The motor Spinning And Dumping The Clutch on hill and lett the gravity work for you

Yep, pull started and roll started many of them. Even pull started a small block Chevy with an automatic trany once. It had a Powerglide 2 speed trans, the only one of that era that you could pull start.

Only dumb questions are unasked ones, plus I've been on this site for at least ten years and grew up hard scrabble running gas tractors. We were poor and you could run free drip from the gas wells in gas tractors.

I thought the JD 3010 and 4010 and the 3020 and 4020 were designed so you could not pull them unless they were in tow mode that dissengaged the tranny from the engine. This was both gas and diesel I thought was that way. So no way to start one. Now the way a Ford was built I can see being able to pull one to start. I know I just hated that tranny in my Uncle's 3020 when I drove it. Driving it made me when it was time to get bigger tractors all I looked at were Ford, would not take a second look at one of those Deeres.

Leroy, you are a bit CONFUSED. When pull-starting a synchro DEERE the transmission topshaft is turning, driving the transmission oilpump, and all is well.

You could drag it around all day long with no issues with the engine turning..

The problem comes to be when towing the tractor in one of the "neutral" positions.

When doing that, gears are idling on the transmission topshaft, which is stationary and the the shaft and gears are running steel-to-steel while not being lubed.

Since it's a "collar shift" transmission, there's no bushings needed or used between the steel gear and the steel shaft.

When you correctly place the shifter in "TOW", all shift collars on the lower shaft are disengaged, so nothing above the lower shaft is turning or needing lube, and all is well.

"TOW" has NOTHING to do with disconnecting the transmission from the engine.
