The sound of Power

I will never forget the first time I saw a steam engine running a sawmill! They were sawing a big oak log, it was almost silent until the log met the saw, then that engine was pounding away with steam leaking out in many places!

Those steamers fascinate me. What is it that actually makes the noise? Always figured it is the steam exhausting from the cylinder, is that correct?

I had the privilege to ride a 20 bottom plow being pulled by a 110 hp Case at Pinckneyville for 2 years now. You can almost feel the ground shake. So much more fun to participate than just watch. I've been told they used to run em 24 hours a day with different shifts when it was time to plow. Makes you wonder how many men it took to haul wood, coal and water to keep it fed. Amazing machines.
