Yesterday's Cheap Fix

Rear window regulator quit on my 05 DTS. I have a couple spares, but wasn't sure which door they fit so I pulled the bad one out. I expected the plastic wheel the cable rides on to be broke, but the plastic piece that holds the cable to the metal frame was the culprit. Naturally, I didn't have the right regulator either...

Since the cable has ends cast onto it that hook into the drum, it's not possible to slide another plastic piece on. I figured I could make one out of aluminum and slit the side to get it over the cable. I probably have more time in it than its worth, but it's working and didn't cost me anything...

Motor cycle break cable adjusters are the same as the part you made. It is the piece that is located at the hand grip. Jim

I would have done the same thing. You talk about the cost, but you now have a better than original regulator. Got to figure how many will it outlast. I think you did god.

Nice job, and you have a window that works NOW, instead of having it all torn apart while waiting for the new part to arrive.

I've fixed many window regulators back better than new.

So many use the cheap plastic parts...

Had a lady from church with a Jeep, both front regulators failed and none available. I took hers apart, fixed them, put them back in. About a month later new ones came available, and since it had extended warranty, she wanted new ones, not the repaired ones.

Within 6 months both new ones failed, so here I go again, fixed them. That was 10 years ago and as far as I know they are still working!
