Old Tanker, When I was in Army 1960 1990 with a break or two, A small unit Cavalry was a Troop. Artillery was a Battery and infantry and all others Company. I saw on a tombstone of one of my friends, Vietnam casualty, his unit was Company C, 1st battalion, 1st Cavalry Division. Why was it not Troop C. I was at one time in A troop 15 Cav Bn. 2nd Armored Division. When and why did the Cavalry stop calling a small unit a Troop and calling them a Company? When I was in an NCO academy with a n artillery unit the small unit was a Battery

You missed the important part.......1st Cav [b:7328a8af6c]Division[/b:7328a8af6c]. When I retired in 96 everything in a division level Cav Squadron and ARC was a troop. When I was assigned to B co 2/10 Cav BN we were a company. And in fact that's what we were an Armor Company. And although I'm not sure I think that is where the difference is. IF the unit's Table of Organization and Equipment (TO&E) is that of an armor or infantry company then that's what it is. If the TO&E is a Cav troop TO&E then it's a troop.

Google "BCT" or "Brigade Combat Team". Drill down far enough and you'll see that a Cav squadron is made up of a HQ troop, 3 line troops, and an FSB (forward support BN).
 
It all depends on what type unit it is. In Vietnam the 1st CAV was an airmobile infantry division. As such, the units were actually infantry units rebranded to form the Cav Division. For example, the 1st Bn 7th Cav had been the 2nd Bn 23 Inf, the 2nd Bn 7th Cav had been the 2nd Bn 9th Inf and the 5th Bn 7th Cav had been the 1st Bn 11th Cav. Those were the units famously led by Gen Hal Moore and made known by the book We were soldiers once and Young. Those guys were still 11B, not 19D.
The units which held squadron designation were the guys flying the UH-1 Bell Taxi or Ah-1 Cobras and other assorted helicopters.
Presently the 1st Cav Div is a heavy armor division organized as a unit of action meaning that the battalions consist of both Armor and Infantry units. The division is home to 3 of the 10 Armored Brigade Combat Teams. Presently all the Brigade HQ units are designated Troops but it would appear that the line units are Companies.

Dave, he said 1st Cav Division. It's still a divisional element, not a BCT nor a true Cav outfit. In 1996 when I retired there were Armored divisions, Infantry divisions (Mech, Airborne, Air Mobile, light and mountain) and 1st Cav. Armor Mech and Cav all used the exact same TO&E and were actually Armor divisions in makeup. Kinda like 194th Armor BDE before it was disbanded. It had D troop 10 Cav (actual Cav Troop) 1st and 2nd BN 10 Cav (actual Armor BN's by TO&E) an Arty battery, Med BN and support BN. Back then a divisional Cav Squadron was 2 maneuver Squadrons, air cav Squadron and HHQ. The 2 maneuver Squadrons were 2 scout platoons and 2 tanks platoons. I was a platoon SGT for a tank PLT in 1/4 Cav at FT Riley before it was disbanded about a year before I retired.

IIRC it was the Division 86 concept that put Mech infantry divisions on the same TO&E as an Armor division. And that didn't mean that it changed in 86. The change was completed in 86.

Now they have changed things again to meet current threats. IN 86 the Soviet Union was considered the main threat.
