Read your post and decided to open a new thread about dog bites, I find it very interesting that the breed of dog that has bit me more than any other breed did not make this top ten list. First off let me start by saying the breed I?m fixing to mention is my favorite breed, have always had one right after another since I was a six year old boy and currently have three at the moment named after characters in one of my favorite sitcoms, Odis, Barney, and Goober. Without telling the breed yet let me also say that I?ve walked in and out of hundreds of thousands yards in 39 years of working with a public utility service, not retired yet, got a few more years and dog bites to go yet. I?ve been bitten by German Shepherds, Blue Heelers, Chihuahuas, Irish Setters, Bulldogs, Spaniels, Mixed Breed dogs, etc even Billy Goats, Geese, and Horses over the years when working on private property, once I was bitten by a Blue Healer that caused me to have to take a series of rabies shots. But what I?m leading up to is the one short legged breed that I have loved since I was a little boy is the very breed that has been most aggressive in biting my ankles and legs in my public service has been the lovable ?Dachshund?.
I believe I?m an authority on dog bites these days, heck some of my weeny dogs in years past have nipped strangers before too. Summer time is worst time of the year to get dog bitten, when the kids are out of school and at home a dogs personality is different, when no one is home the dogs are laid back and couldn?t care less but if the master is home or the youngsters then look out, caught y?all off guard didn?t I ? If the Dachshund had the size of a Lion you would need a bazooka or a flamethrower to keep him off if you when he?s ready to attack....

don't doubt you at all, but as a witness, those wieners are only a snack for a coyote!

I have been bitten a few times by our own poodle ! doesn't like being picked up from underneath sometimes ? might have some tender spots ? But it can't take much or bite very hard !
Most scared I've been from a dog was an Irish Setter Mom brought home from the pound. That thing had some severe mental problems ? The dog pounds need to screen out bad dogs before they rehome them ! Glad it didn't snap on one of the kids !

Funny you say that. My mother raised Dachshunds and my earliest memories are of sitting in the puppy box with Mom and her litter and playing with them and giving them names. I have always had at least one Dachshund in my house since then. I agree that this is a breed that needs understanding and proper socialization. Many times over the years I have had comments from veterinarians about how easy to work with my Dachshunds were/are. I guess it is because I grew up with them that we get things right early in life. Only one time, and it was just a few years ago with our current dog, did I have a situation where I misread a signal and she nailed me. It was entirely a misunderstanding though, and never repeated. A couple thousand people a year go thru my home office and most never realize that a dog is right there with them. She does not even bark.

I have posted the statistic several times in these debates that the small ankle biters are far more aggressive than pits, but a severe or deadly attack from a dashund is not too likely, but is well documented in the pits and rot breeds. Doesnt take much research to prove that.

My wife had a Pickanese. Meanest dog I ever saw. If anyone showed harm to her or the mailman. It was time to fight. When the mailman came into the neighborhood. That was a funny site to see. She would escort him on his rounds. He told me dog attacks dropped to zero with her around.

We have had several Chihuahuas. 2 males that would bite me if they were in my wifes lap and I got close, but they would also bite her same way. But if you take into account the fact that so many pits and rotts and what not are owned by gangstas, dopers, redneck dope growers, and dog fighters, as well as honest folk that think they have a living home defense system, and the size and power of a dog that may well not be able to recognize the neighbor from a serial killer, those big dogs get into a lot more incidents that lead to someone innocent being harmed.

I just posted what I found. Don't blame the messenger.

According to a study from the Center For Disease Control (CDC)1, approximately 4.7 million dog bites occur in the United States each year, and 800,000 of those bites result in medical care. The U.S. population is approximately 325.7 million people as of 2017. That means a dog bites 1 out of every 69 people.

this articles claims 74% of deaths are caused by pitbulls.

Again, I didn't make up this stuff. Google it yourself.

alinark,
I didn?t ask the question how many have I been mauled by, I think you fail to see the humor in my post about how aggressive a Dachshund can be, they are good pets but all three of mine are older than my 5 and 3 year old granddaughters and knowing the dogs temperaments I don?t even let the granddaughters around them when their here, the little doxies have the ?little man syndrome? and I just don?t want to risk one of the girls getting nipped...

My daughter-in-law has a dachshund. She's a fierce little bugger (the dog, not the daughter-in-law). She's my buddy, and she loves my wife, but she hates their neighbor who lives across the road, and for no valid reason. Neighbor gets up every morning at daylight and goes out on the porch to drink a couple cups of coffee, and he can hear Sally raising cain at him inside my son's house. He's concerned about all the ruckus that he sets off. I told him not to worry - it's his porch and if they don't like all the ruckus at that time of day they can do something to correct it.

Sally might bite you, but it would be a stretch to think that she would kill you.

Gray take no offense that was just my lame attempt at spoofing ya, just have a weird sense of humor i guess.

i have 3 dogs myself a Chihuahua she would fit in my shirt pocket when we first got her she weighs a whopping 3 lbs. now she thinks she owns the place, we have a Schnauzer real good watch dog and last but not least a Jack Russel mixed but mostly Russel now him i don't trust, he and i had a meeting of the wills although neither of us won i would have shot him if he bit me but being the smart fella i am i would caught heck from the wife and my girls.
your point was well taken and and you were on the money.

I've learned to tolerate dogs 'cause my wife comes from a long line of "animal hoarders", I've done the best I can do, got a couple of "rescue mutts" here that have learned to love me. (They say dogs area a good judge of character, but I assume these two are confused.)

That being said, unless you are mafia or a drug dealer, there's NO legit reason why anyone should have a dog that makes the neighbors feel threatened.

Gonna repeat that... unless you are mafia or a drug dealer, there's NO legit reason why anyone should have a dog that makes the neighbors feel threatened.

My grandfather was one of those guys that dogs didn't like.
He kept hunting dogs of many breeds. Rabbit hunting, coon
hunting, pheasant hunting, etc. and I think they all bit him.

None of them ever bit me or anyone else that I know of.
I never figured out why that was, but I told him if any dog I
owned bit me, it would never bite me or anyone else again.
Luckily, he lived through all of his dog bites.

My snarky comment is that the little dogs feel they have to bite, where as the big dogs just have to intimidate you. And Yes, I do deliveries where I encounter many dogs. I just try to read them and move accordingly

grayrider,
I've been a landlord for 50 years. If I allow a tenant to have a dog and dog bites someone, I get sued.

After reading all the comments, you can see why I don't allow dogs. All dogs bite. All dogs bite, all dogs are a potential liability for a landlord.

Landlords are required to allow Emotional Support Animals. That animal can be anything, pigs, peacocks, horses, dogs, cats. Dogs are not required to be trained. Dogs can be pitbulls. Indiana passes a law that removes Landlord liability for Emotional Support Animals.

If you read my last listing, about 900,000 dog bites, 1 in 69 people have been bitten by a dog. The Pitbull is responsible for 74% of the fatalities. That's almost 3 out of 4 deaths caused by one breed. All dogs bite, only a few dogs can kill putting them on the list of the most dangerous.

Another take from your post is the best argument for a nation wide Leash law.
I'm glad I live in a county that requires dogs to be on a leash or confined.

A couple months back there was a report of a pack of dachshund mixes killing some one. Took a lot of research, but the "mix" was pitbull.

Our dashand will threaten anyone who comes on the place, But if no one is home, you can walk in and pack off the entire place and she will just wag her tail. The oldest and her family have two mixed breeds we refer to as the mooses.(100 yards away) Our 10# dashund will back both of them down if they get between Robin and and herself. If I had to fight off a dog, I would take my chances with a big dog.
