block laying

I know this is not tractor related but seen something today never seen before, this guy was laying block at a construction site and after he would mortar the block in place another guy would fill it full of dirt, and i am sure it was just plan clay dirt so question is for you people out there that know about laying block why was he doing this. thanks for any replies

I have seen that done with sand to help block out noise.

My guess would be higher thermal density. That is what was used in the walls on beam and peg houses. Smear mud with straw and horse hair into the walls. Then you put lath and then plaster.

The block is made hollow for concrete, not dirt. A block wall isn't that strong with the cement.

thermal and noise barrier---it also adds a bit of density to the system where it does add some shear resistance
