good evening guys, a couple of pics of todays minni welding bench build. not quite finished yet, have to weld a 4" angle iron 24" long on the back side behind the vise for lining up pipe or square tubing or angle iron to tack them up. also my grinder stand I built years ago so all my welding tools are in one place, not looking all over the shop when I need them.

handy little bench and if I am working with longer material I just set up pipe stands off the end of the bench, quick and easy to move. this is the 3rd on I've built over the years.

Nice job, and your grinder stand gives me an idea I may borrow, as mine always seem to end up in a tangled mess no matter how carefully I put them away.

help yourself tim  I built that stand over 30 years ago, one day I got fed up with my welding tools scattered all over the place either in my shop or on my welding truck, and as you said tangled up mess of cords, I built this one for in the shop and another I built to slide into the deck of my welding truck by the vise.

I have a 10" bench grinder and a vice mounted like that but the pipe is a from a drive shaft... Now I want a big arse piece of pipe :D

I am gonna guess those blue grinders are Makita 5"'ers They are nice real nice...

(quoted from post at 19:24:00 09/03/18) That?s really slick! The base looks like a brake drum?

it is a semi brake drum Philip, a word of caution on using a brake drum, being made of cast iron you have to preheat it hot before and after you weld it to keep it from cracking. I used 7018 rod, and lots of preheat. (propane torch)

Kind of off topic but in the picture looking past the back end of the pickup what are the items on
the ground? Looks like a large shallow drain pan. One has a U bend pipe on it. Several yellow
items around that are not clear enough to make out. Surely these are some Canadian secret
items not yet released to the more under-developed parts of the world. Lol. Very nice welding stand. I built one recently as well using a semi truck brake drum. Only mine just has a small platform to mount a nice 5? Colombian brand vise on that has just sat around on my garage floor for years.

Does not compute:

not looking all over the shop when I need them.

It's a lot easier to pretend to work while you are walking around the shop than it is standing over a well organized bench with everything you need right in front of you. :D

On similar projects, I've just used a steel plate on the bottom of the pipe and then bolted it to the brake drum using the existing lug holes. 3 holes in a rough triangle are usually plenty to hold it and it saves the hassle of welding on the cast drum. Mark everything out, drill your holes, weld the plate to the pipe and put in the bolts. Also makes it easier to disassemble later if needed. Planning on wandering out to the garage at some point and making up a grinder holder, though it's gonna look a whole lot more like 3 semi-circles cut in a piece of scrap lumber than CMF's version, as I just need something to keep 'em easily accessible and not tangled up.

......so all my welding tools are in one place....

That takes all the excitement out of the job! Seriously, that is an El Primo bench and vise. Nice work. unc
