Probably iH wanting to come up with their own
design and not have to use the one John Deere
came up with and let everybody use without patent
infringement would be my guess . Good looking

Its a factory ROPS I guess its called.My IH 464 Industrial has one exactly like it have seen a few more.I changed the exhaust on the 464 to come up by the hood.

Maybe so you don't hurt the rear tires and fenders when you roll it over. Must be fun in and around trees.

The trouble with that series of IH tractors is the fuel tank sets behind the seat and between the fenders. SO you do not have access to the top of the rear axle housing. This is a work around. IH had a habit of doing this. Just a MAKE do type of attachment. Look at a factory roll guard for a open station IH 1086 and it looks about the same.

Larry the shift linkage was problematic and wore out before the rest of the tractors. A man really had to learn how to shift them.

My guess is it was more for tractor protection then operator protection. Doesn't look like the guy in pic even has a seat belt on. ROPS. doesn't do much good to operator without
seat belt. Probably was an optional ROPS. available if you were going to use tractor in ditches or steep hillsides on a regular basis. Back in the day our county had two "mowing
tractors" Had a relative that drove one of them. He said they tipped one of them over almost every other day.

We have a 574 and a 674 the 5 has a loader on it. Not to bad was pretty good in it's time. It has a lot of counter weight at the back end. The swept back front axle was not the best program for loader work. It did make it a very nimble tractor for tight maneuvering. al in all not a bad tractor. The 674 makes a good tractor for spreading fertilizer, running augers, and such.
