Industry #B47 or GM #909047 bearing. Note that the "B47" number has been "recyled" and can also refer to a TINY needle bearing.

Looking for an outer front wheel bearing for a 1961 C20 Chevy truck.

This is a ball-type wheel bearing and is "unobtainium" from the usual sources.

I'm NOT sure if there's a tapered roller bearing that can be "subbed", that is the case for certain old ball bearings of this style.

I would be grateful to anyone who may have a source, or information on a "sub".

Even a useable used one would be GREAT, this 'ol truck doesn't get many miles on it anymore.

I found a list of the dimensions, NOT sure if it's 100% correct, and I don't have the old one to measure.

Bearing Bore (in)--0.9065,
Bearing OD (in)--2.2503,
Bearing Width (in)--0.79,
Inner Race Bore (in)--0.9065,
Inner Race Radius (in)--0.14,
Inner Race Width (in)--0.59,
Outer Race OD (in)--2.2503,
Outer Race Width (in)--0.48

Second photo is of the INNER wheel bearing, a B48, the bigger brother of the B47 I'm looking for, along with the little needle bearing you get when ordering a B47 from modern sources, NOT gonna quite fit!

Thanks, Jim, but look at the site linked... UNAVAILABLE/out of stock!

That's what I've been finding with most sources, even Rock Auto shows them, but when you try to "add to cart" it comes back "could not be added to cart as it's unavailable.

Even LMC truck doesn't have 'em, they have the inner bearing, but NOT the outer.

I am sure there is a bearing out there. It's just finding it. I don't know why GM used ball bearings up into the 50's in the front wheels of their vehicles. Maybe they owned the ball bearing factory? They thought since ball bearings can take the force in all four directions they should be good. who knows? Stan

Mutt and Jeff, also note Amazon shows "out of stock". "Stockwise Auto" shows no stock when you try to add it to the cart. THANKS for your effort, tho!

Try a local bearing house or a national supplier that sells bearings and mechanical components online: Fastenal; Motion Industries; McMaster-Carr; etc.

I tried those and more. Typically, they all come up with a bearing with the recycled part number, the little needle bearing.

Looks like "NOS" is the only hope, have contacted a number of parts suppliers/restoration parts supplies for GM trucks of that era, about the best I've gotten is "Good luck with THAT"!

Have a Bearing Service near you? Call or take your numbers and dimensions. They should have or can get it. They may only be in Michigan, but I have gotten some odd bearings for my cousins King Midget. Couldn't find them anywhere else.

Those seem like the ones the guys were getting for in 2 cyl. JD fanshafts. IIRC JD7654 might be the JD # ?
JD parts.com may give the specs.

Try a place called,Patricks. They do a lot of GM truck stuff.I know there are changeover kits available for the half tons and cars,I've probably done a dozen 55-56-57 changeovers to tapered roller.I did my 55 half ton pickup too.

eBay has several.

If that link doesn't work just search the bearing number on any ebay screen.

Thinking outside the box--maybe swap out the whole hub assemblies for something more recent that will accept the roller bearings? There's a Chevy truck forum, don't know how far back they go. Might be able to upgrade to disc brakes at the same time.

There ought to be parts for those. Government motors changed them over way back when, due to problems with them. Put roller bearings in.
Could try D&D truck In Corunna MI Richard or Raymond should be able to come up with parts. They pull rabbits out of hats all the time for people. 989 743 5707 is the number. If a girl answers that is Richards Sister. Richard has been doing parts since before they outlawed double bottoms in MI.

Federal-Mogul National Bearing/BCA #B47
UPC #724956001804

I would call Federal-Mogul National Bearing/BCA directly to see if they have discontinued it or a new batch is on the horizon.

I am recalling that I ran into that when I was looking for used brake drums for my 1965 Chevy we overhauled back in Automotive Mechanics class. I am thinking that you can use the tapered roller bearings from a 1965 or 1966 in there. (Or else use the entire hub from a 1965, I forget which.) But because the tapered bearings probably tolerate more pre-load, you probably need to convert both inner and outer bearings to tapered if you go that route.

Re: preload. Those angular contact ball bearings are to be preloaded. Tapered roller wheel bearings are set up with NO preload. Snug to seat and back off to insert key.

Well I believe you are wrong on that advice. Specific preload is found on tapered roller bearings, and a very light (near none) preload is used on angular contact bearings. Look for specifications and instructions. With respect, Jim
