Generators-Six or 12 Volt??

It's easy to determine whether a coil is six or 12 volts, but I was wondering if anyone had any specs on a generator as to what ohms resistance would be between the "A" terminal and the "F" terminal. Trying to determine if it is six or twelve volt easily. One I am trying measures 3.9 ohm. Any ideas?

The rear of a 12v case, around the brushes,is smaller than the rest of the case. On a 6v,the diameter is the same the full length.

ualifying my remarks with I've seen a lot in over 70 years, but not everything.
Any car from 1940 to 1958 whether 6v or 12v have field resistance in a range of ~1.5 to 2.2 Ohms & 6v/12v overlap in Ohms, , so by that I say no simple determination. Ford tractors from 1939 thru 1952 (6v) fall at 1.3 to 4.5 Ohms, so same conclusion. A little skeptical of the 4.5 Ohms as it only shows up on two of eight different generators of those tractors. If it is a Delco-Remy, then 6V have a black tag and 12v have a red tag. Generator rebuilder my have more to say.

ot universally true.

I'm no expert on the subject and certainly wouldn't say you're wrong, but personally,I've never seen an exception. Maybe something other than a Delco?

have one D_R that is straight/same size barrel end to end and the Ford hundred series tractors whether 6v or 12v are all same size too. I try? to be careful not to cast everything in terms of what I have experienced or seen, as whenever I have done that, I wind up being shown that I have not seen it all and find that generalizations I have made have almost always had exceptions. I'm simply human.

Same here, that's why I asked if something besides Delco might be the exception and didn't dig in my heels. I've always found that in most cases, you can tell at a quick glance by using that generalization. There are exceptions to every rule.

I cannot answer your question, but I had a generator ,from my Ford jubilee rebuilt to 12 volt to keep the stock look. I don't know if the rebuilder marked it 12 volt or not. joe

I asked my local rebuilder the same question years ago. His reply was there is no such thing as a 6 volt or 12 volt generator. Generators produce amps - not volts. Technically he's right but that doesn't help with looking at one and knowing which system it's used on.
