Composting grass clippings

I have a landscaper bring me his grass clippings. I spread them out, cover with top soil. I keep repeating the process until I get a good rain.

Yesterday I got an inch of rain. The top soil was muddy. Perfect to mix the grass/dirt together.

I used front bucket and pushed the mud back and forth. Then went at a right angle and pushed everything to one end. In about a month grass clippings will be gone.

Bagging grass clippings is robbing your yard of nutrients. I don't bag, but landscaper has people that want him to pick it up.

Me, too.

5', 6', 7' and 10.5' mowers. All with tractors.

Shopping for 12' or 15' mower now.

No clippings.

Perhaps a minor point in your situation but that method may adversely affect the tilth of the soil you are trying to improve.

I put all my clipping back on yard as i mow. They make fertilizer for yard along with leaves in fall.

We put all of our grass clippings on the paths through the garden and anywhere else we don't want weeds growing. Kills the weeds and they get tilled in .

On occasion I will have grass clippings in certain parts of the yard. Knowing this I mow those first, finish the yard and then come back to areas, by now the clippings have dried somewhat and I raise the discharge chute then mow over them to blow the clippings out and scatter them, works for me with no raking.

I know where there is a lightly used Woods 12 foot Bat Wing mower for sale. Contact me for more information.

Here is a clip of an article about composting grass clippings.

You can also use fast-decomposing lawn clippings as soil amendments or mulch. You can work 2 or 3 inches of clippings into the top 6 inches of soil in your garden. As they decay, they add organic content and nitrogen to the soil. Alternatively, layer about 2 inches of clippings over the root area of a shrub or tree. Mulch is a great garden helper; it moderates the temperature of the soil, holds in moisture, inhibits weeds and adds nutrients to the soil. Because grass clippings break down rapidly, however, you need to replenish the mulch regularly.

Next year I plan to put down 3 ft wide strips of used carpet between rows for weed control.

When I used to bag my lawn, I too would put grass clippings on garden for moisture and weed control.

Grass clippings mold too fast, so I incorporate it in top soil I plan to put in garden next year.

"Next year I plan to put down 3 ft wide strips of used carpet between rows for weed control. "....

It has been my experience, the weeds will still grow.
Either come up in between the backing or grow on top of the carpet.
I've also used the black landscape fabric with similar results.

Only time I bag is to replenish the clippings in the veggie garden.

You do have to have some caution when using clippings from someone else's lawn- especially with herbicide contamination. Using grass clippings from a yard sprayed with a 2,4-D broadleaf weed killer as a mulch under grape trellis can kill the grape plants.

Composting would reduce this effect.
