My attempt to kill poison ivy without chemicals

I don't want to get close to poison ivy. It will jump on me.

Passion flower will climb over anything. A blue native wildflower will also climb over other
flowers. So I decided to plant both next to poison ivy and see what happens. Looks like the two
flowers survived the transplant. May take a year or two for the flowers to establish. My money is on
the passion flower. I've seen it blimp up the side of a building, 15 ft or more. I think even if the
ivy survives, the passion flower will look nice climbing up the trees.

Has anyone tried using other plants to compete with poison ivy?

i use roundup, 24-d and dawn dish shop on poison ivy. seems like it spreads seeds and sends runners underground as it spreads.

Poison definitely does send out runners. They can go quite a distance, spreading the plant the whole way. About the only thing I have seen poison ivy avoid is cedar trees. It will climb any other tree, but goes around a cedar.

The only non-chemical way to control poison ivy, is to work the ground and keep at it till the roots dry up and die. A heavy combination of 2,4d and roundup has been working for me this year. Even in the dry weather we've been having. Gotta about soak the whole plant.

Without chemicals the only way I know of to kill it out is to keep it mowed. My place is thick with it except where the ground it kept mowed.

Hi, I use 1/3 litre round up in 15 us gallons water. It comes back hit it again, it will finally go but watch for runners too. Ed Will Oliver BC

I have been told that dish soap actually limits the effectiveness of the chemical. That is why the store sell the "non ionic" surfactant. I have been told to use molasses in with roundup. Supposedly it makes the plants take it up quicker. I have not tried to see if it works.

I don't get it but the wife is real sensitive. I used to get a poison ivy killer from my hardware store. Came in a plastic bag, yellow crystals to dissolve in water. The active ingredient was ammonium thiosulfate. It worked great but I haven't seen it in years.

You are right, mower does put the hurts to poison ivy.

If you notice the ivy I'm trying to get rid of is under a tree and a hillside.

Crossbow in a backpack sprayer works very well for me.
Saturate the leaves. It may take a follow up treatment or two to finally kill it.

Cattle will graze it down to nothing couple of years and it will be gone. Cattle love it with 0 issues
