Styled D Radiator Replacement...The Dilemma Continues

So after having my radiator tanks for 3 weeks, the welder I finally found tells me that the upper and lower tanks keep cracking due to the large amount of corrosion and the metal being so thin, due to the corrosion. The holes are filled, but the tanks leak badly from the hairline cracks. He says he has a lot of experience welding cast, and the reviews I have seen for him seem to back that up. He apologized for the problems and said he had a lot of time involved, and asked for $100.00 to cover his time, the original estimate for the repairs was $200.00.
It was hard enough to find someone in my area that would even do cast welding, any opinions on weather or not I should try to get a second opinion and try to salvage these tanks????. Waste of time????. A Deere salvage yard I spoke with this morning can ship me a set of tanks"Used good condition" for $500.00, nothing in the local area at all.
Going to think about starting a go fund me for myself :( ...Tom

I went through the same thing on the 1944 Model John Deere I resurrected from the Dead.
Finally the 4th upper tank I could use, but it was for a large filler instead of the smaller
type. It didn't matter to the tractor when it was all said & done.

How about blasting the tanks down to bare metal and fiber glassing them on the under side. This is not a pressure system is it?

How about fiberglass resin or waterglass? A good radiator sealer like mendtite should stop leaks in small cracks too.

I would spray 3 coats of copper coat on the inside (a day of warm drying between each) the material should be effective. Not much loss if it fails! Jim

It would be interesting to get the opinion of "George in Md" (NOT sure of his exact handle) who has posted here from time to time.

He is a GURU of cast iron repair.

It would be worth searching the archives, he has posted a link from time to time to his website showing his work, and he's repaired a lot of stuff WAY MORE "gone" than a DEERE radiator tank could ever hope to be!

Contact Rich Brown at New Paris Tractor Parts. ph.# 844-214-3946. He should have a good set of tanks or radiator. www.newparistractor.com

New Paris is the place I called earlier, 300 for the tanks and another 200 freight to California.
I already spent a bunch on the top tank, maybe the seller would consider some kind of refund, doubtful.Spent another chunk on a used rocker housing to replace the cracked one that was on it, the welders fee for his time, the replacement core I originally set out to replace, the shutters and linkage, gaskets, gallons of beer, ect, ect. Hate to try some mediocre repair only to have it fail after all the work it took to put it back together.
Wasn't really in my budget to spend this much, but it never is, it is to be expected I guess with stuff this old. Thanks for all your'e Input...Tom

Couple of posts talked about the fiberglass method it will work fine but needs to be sandblasted so you have good bare metal. There is no pressure and the tank does not expand that much when warm so give it a try you will not have much invested and it will work seal on the inside one coat then the cloth then coat again.

Ran into the same problem with a mh33 oil pan. Every time it cooled it got a new crack. Finally sanded it, and covered with jb weld and put it back in service.

I have a styled D that's good for parts. This is in West central Texas. Also have other 2 cyl. They have been in ads several times just haven't put back up in a while.
