All the snot about new gas

I was going through the service manual for the John Deere LA, their octane rating was 65-72, don't think it will ping on modern gas.

Until you get that puppy running, how will you know, and with all the rattles and clicks inherent - how will you know ?

I have a different flavor tractor, but I agree, my manual says something like use at least 73 octane, and don't store the stuff in an uncovered container. I take it to mean, this manual was written in 1939 or so, it means don't store the gas in an old washtub out behind the barn ?.

Octane isn't the issue with gas these days.Bet the carb on that LA will gum up with the green stuff when today's gas sit's in it for a while and eat up certain parts too.

Let's face it,some people can use Harbor Freight tools for decades without a complaint while some of us bust sockets and twist off screwdriver tips first time we use them. Those same people can store engines with modern gas then have them start on second try after sitting for years. Me,I'd be lucky if the carb didn't have to be rebuilt after sitting a few months. It's all in knowing what you're doing boys, all in knowing what you're doing. There's an old codger up the road that washes his underwear and socks with home made soap and they don't need to be washed again for 6 months. All in knowing how it's done.

Always run the carb dry. This solves so many problems. I started one of my Echo string trimmers that was put away two years ago. I had dumped the gas tank and ran it dry. Fresh mix and a couple of primer pumps, she started FIRST pull. Struggled for a few seconds and backed off the choke. Runs like a champ.

My Grandpa always wore three shirts He would take the inner shirt off and switch it with the outer. He said the wind and sun and the rain wash the outer layers, it's the inner one that gets smelly. LOL
