Well, I got my nephew started on this hobby. He finally got to a point where he could afford some tractors. He was able to buy his grandpas Allis CA and then his great uncles JD 2010 which he bought new, He moved them to his FIL's farm and was just starting to tinker with the JD. A few nights ago the barn got hit by lightening. He happened to be visiting and saw it happen. 10 mins from hit to fully engulfed. They got a modern JD and baler out and the CA. But the 2010 and 4 other vintage Olivers fried along 7000 bales of straw. So the family JD is gone, but, its only stuff. Sad, but we move on.

Sorry to hear this. As you said it was only stuff, as I get older I realize the stuff doesn't matter anywhere as much as the people and those special critters. Glad you're all okay.

So sorry to read this and see the picture of the fire. One of my biggest fears has always been fires because they get out of control in no time. Thank God nobody got hurt. May God bless your family. This is a reminder to me and everyone else reading your post that anything can be taken away from us at any moment.

Whenever I see something like that my first thought is how many GPMs to darken it down. A fire dept. always hopes for a quick hit at high GPMs then follow up with hitting hot spots. The tanker probably has a deck gun with a straight tip, 1,000 GPMs pump and 2000 gal on board. It would probably need a little new paint after.

That's bad.Wonder how the insurance will work out assuming they are insured? My farm fire insurance will not pay if a vehicle or tractor is stored in a hay storage building.

I heard of a man who was going to tear his old barn down. First thing he did was remove the lightning rods. That night, lightning finished the demolishing work.

Another man had a 3 car garage that was falling down. He was getting estimates to demolish it. Again Lightning struck the garage. It literally blew the garage apart, only one corner was standing. So this guy was happy to collect from the insurance instead of paying to remove garage.

Did nephew have lightning rods? Hope he had insurance.

Glad no one got hurt.

I was driving by a neighbor" farm after dark in a thunder storm. Lightening hit his barn right as I went by. I was temporarily blinded by the bright flash. As soon as I could see, every single nail in the metal roofing glowing. I turned around and drove to his house. Maybe 3-4 minutes and the barn was fully engulfed. He and not heard the lightening as he had his hearing aids out.

His insurance company as a Butt about his claim. They tried seven different ways to get out of it. They first tried saying that the hay was too green in the barn. Well it had been in the barn for 4 weeks. Green hay starts in a day or so. The his wiring was not correct. He finally had his lawyer write them with statements from myself and the first responding firemen. They finally paid.

I had to look at my policy an it does not say anything about hay storage and equipment storage being not allowed in the same building.
