Wild Turkeys

We have two adult turkeys that wander around with a number of babies, nibbling and grazing, all around the farm, lately it has been 4 babies. Previous years it has been 8 or 9. Here's the question; from 50 yards away, the adults appear to be females. True? They have white heads, no big huge rear feathers, have slender bodies. Do you think they ARE two females? A mama and an aunt?

I used to see that a lot. 2 or more hens with a group of little ones. I miss all of the turkey but 1 year we were overwhelmed with them. Had over 300 in the yard most of one winter.

Sounds like females. Females also won't have a beard. The turkey wattles and snood can change color to red, blue or white depending on whether they are calm or excited.

occasionally females will have a beard--so in NYS they allow one bearded turkey in the spring season as its hard to tell them from the toms.

The hens raise the chicks, toms are off by themselves this time of year. Its fairly common for 2 to 3 hens and their chicks to form small flocks through the summer.

I guess you were. Wow! I like to watch them. Hunting channels on Dish show a lot of stalking. Great watching. Toms really get serious about their gobble-gobble. Fun to watch them and to woo the hens.

I watched a flock of 39 turkeys all of one winter, there was 2 hens that had beards in that flock...

The comeback of the wild turkey is a real good example of managing wildlife. We have a flock that stays around the farm here all time . Some years will see a better hatch than others as the weather has a lot to do with it. Attached photo is one my wife made here in the yard. Lots of folks look at it and asked where did we get the painting .
