HI. Any information on how to free up the shifter on a John Deere R transmission? First gear works but nothing else will move. Thanks

Are the shifters rusted stuck to the "rails", or are the sliding gears rusted to the splines they shift side-to-side on?

(First is the one in the foreground of the photo, right?)

Bob. I don't know where there stuck. I tried prying on the shifter but it wouldn't move. The photo below shows the shift pattern.

I spent a lot of time on an R when I was young, but we never had transmission problems. Has it been sitting out it the rain a lot? I would get a good hardwood stick and a hammer and gently tap back and forth on the slides, remember they will not always go right into gear when sitting, so be gentle! I would spray some penetrating oil around the slides and splined shafts if they are dry.

I bought a 300 IH that was froze-rusted transmission. It was just the detente balls rusted. I took the springs and balls out, lots of panther juice, and I just worked the rails back and forth. Freed by quitting time.
