red barn paint

Old RED metal barn and a wood shed could use some freshening. I prefer a redder version of paint. concerned about fading. a barn near me turned pink after a few years. I have been happy with Home Depot paint in other colors. considering using their red barn paint. Have olympic, sherwin williams and other options nearby. any recommendations? what results have you had?

Overall I can't find any paint that holds up out in the weather since the lead got removed from them. I have a little wood shed. So far the Sherman Williams one has held up better than a few others I've used. Only paint from Home Depot I have used was some brand of cement block paint and it only stayed on for 1 year ! I was not happy I wasted all that time brushing it on.

Ok I give. Why were barns painted red? I do know years ago Red Lead Primer was commonplace. Were they painted with that because maybe it was plentiful and cheap?

My guess is it comes from Europe where they used red oxide for a color. Maybe red oxide was plentiful for them.

I'm in the same boat. I have one pole building hat needs painted. No rust yet just faded. I think its about 32 years old and has held up well with it's factory paint. I don't have a lot of faith in the new paints today. Everything fades so fast. Either the paint isn't any good or the sun/environment is harsher? Or maybe both? It's a lot of work and expense to just get a few years out of it. I've seen some people put all new metal on when it gets too bad,but I think that is just a waist, but I don't know maybe it would be better??

I would also say Sherwin Williams paint. You need to ask about their commercial line of paints. Is your original paint oil base? If it is you want to try and stay with oil base. Several years ago you could still get oil in commercial.

I've used HD red oil based barn paint and have been really happy with it. no fade. oil based barn paint works equally well on wood or metal! I did the sherman williams expensive paint and was more then a little unhappy!

I think you are right about that. We call that particular red color “Swedish red”. It became very common because it comes from ironoxide which was a waste product from the Swedish coppermines and as it is a mineral pigment it holds up much better than an organic pigment.

If it has to be red, I can't help you. But if you want very good, commercial-quality paint at a give-away price check with your local paint jobber--the store that deals mainly with the pros. They may have a collection of "draw-downs," for different jobs that they want to get rid of. These paints would be around $70/gal, sometimes more. My local Pittsburgh Paints sells them to me for a buck apiece. Best paint I've ever used. Yes I've used Home Depot paint. Short-term solution, won't last.

I don't know but I'll take the red oxide answer as it makes more sense in something requiring durability and the fact that my ancestors and lots of yours (probably} were Central Europeans.

My neighbor had his red metal barn painted 5 years ago. The painter who did it told him he uses use the best Sherwin Willams paint because it holds up the best. You can't see any difference between the old barn and the new addition he attached to it before painting. I painted my old barn with Behr paint from Homer D in 2005 when I added my second barn. For a year they were identical, then the paint started to fade. Not the best pic., but you get the idea of how much. This was taken in 2016.
