Gear grinding questions

We have a leyland 154 gas model tractor and after starting the tractor and driving it around awhile when you go to push the clutch in and shift gears, the gears will not slow down and just keep spinning making it hard to shift gears.

any answer or comments would gladly be appreciated

idle to high or most likely clutch disc is sticking try putting it in gear slipping the clutch pedal and at the same time drag the breaks this might loosing it up or you might be looking at splitting the tractor for new clutch time just my 2 cents

Once you get it in gear, can you hold the clutch down, go back to neutral, then back in gear without it grinding?

If so, the clutch is releasing fully. Try bringing the engine down to slow idle before shifting into gear. Also be sure the transmission is full of oil. The oil helps bring the spinning components to a stop.

If no, as in the gears grind every time, either the clutch is dragging due to the linkage being out of adjustment, the release mechanism on the pressure plate has partially failed, the pressure plate has been slipping, gotten hot and warped, the disc is bent or coming apart, or the pilot bearing is dragging or locked and spinning on the input shaft.

Clutch isn't disconnecting the tranny from the flywheel properly. May be as simple as a linkage adjustment.......

Are you trying to shift while moving or are you having this problem with the tractor stopped?

Don't know much about Leyland's but some transmissions were not meant to be shifted in motion.

Non synchronous transmissions aren't and usually on those and down shifting is much harder to get back in sync than up shifting. I have 3 Fords and
none are synchronous and no biggie if you have the RPMs low. If higher you push in the clutch and let things slow down and the gears will mesh.
