One of my mowing customers asked me how old I was. I told him 76, he said wow, you're still working. I told him as long as I can, I will. As I remember growing up,most of the farmers around here all worked until they were unable because of an illness. I don't think they retired they just slowed down, that's what my Dad did anyway. Stan

I'm 76 also. Quit working for the other guy at age 61 but am a long way from retired. I haul a tractor back and forth to other place 56 miles 1 way and work at other things every day and will until they plant me! My dad died at age 56 from cancer and had paid in to SS ever since it had been in existence, one reason I walked out at 61.

smart man I retired at 55 best thing I could have done no one lives for ever seen to many guys retire later with big plans only for there health to fail

Doctors, lawyers, veterinarians and farmers. When did you ever hear of any of them really fully retiring?

I am still working at 69. I have my regular job, then I am a call firefighter, where I am usually in the top 10% of participation. Then I drive a tri-axle dump truck part time, and I am a part time farmer. I also spend a fair amount keeping my church building in order as custodian. After that I keep my own property up. As I posted recently I am in the middle of a major floor rebuild. I feel very fortunate to be able to keep it up.

My dad retired at 48,that's was 23 years ago. Still says never knew how he got everything done when he worked. Wish I had the same retirement plan as him,I would be done in 7 years!

I'm going to be 62 in December thinking about retiring I operate a asphalt plant I basically have three computers one makes the blacktop one controls the temperature and the other one l use a mouse to load it on dump trucks.i probably load a couple hundred loads out a day going to multiple job sites.i enjoy that part of the job the part I hate is getting up at 3am driving 75 miles one way then working 12 hours and getting back home at 7pm.i have worked for the same company for 43 years now I've just about had enough

I'm 60, my wife is 55 and we would love to retire, but the medical insurance is keeping us from making the move....

My Dad worked hard all his life, sometimes 2 jobs and collected from his pension and social security for two months. I "retired" at 48 and never looked back or regretted it. I stay busy with farming, rental units, and grandkids. I feel very fortunate to have been able to walk away from my job at 48, and pursue other interest. Very fortunate.

Just turned 64 yesterday. Unofficially retired from factory the 23rd. Had surgery on the 24th. They put enough mesh in to do a window. Will officially retire on Sept 1. After 23.5 years on the books. laid off in total 6 years. They gave me a big buyout to go away. In early September I will start my retirement job that I did when I was laid off. I will be hauling frac sand to the gas wells. Gone for a month home for a week. Up and down the mountains hooked to a D 6 with 80,000 lbs. No more time clock. No more 90 miles a day back and forth the city. Just working with the good people of Pa and WV.
Almost Heaven, Bob.

Will be 63 in October and today was my last official day as an employee of "big insurance" for 38 yrs., one month and one day. Same for the wife, but she had 44 yrs. there and just turned 62. I decided they would not be scraping me off the floor and into a body bag like they had to do to a coworker some years ago. Too many projects around the farm to think about another job now.

So Proud to know You ,and that you are happy to be working at age 76, maybe we can meet someday Chief , LOL . Stay healthy 37 chief . Hopefully i can finally get back full bore, because of chemo causing neuropathy in my back and legs and worse in my feet I have been farming and hobbling along like i was 85 yrs old these last 2 yrs . i am only 61. and i think i am getting better every week. ,.,.

I am happy for you. enjoy your own time now. After 36 years working at my factory job. I retired some years back. Just do my weed mowing now, and not making the money I made at the factory, but my time is my own. Stan

At 61, I've outlived my father and both my grandfathers. I'm punching out at 62. I have a lot of stuff I want to do and, based on my family history, maybe not a lot of time to do it.

Stan,
My mom said you will rust out faster than you will wear out. She worked all the time.

My neighbor lady loved flowers. She was always outside doing something. Now in a nursing home at age 92.

Keep going or you will rust.

Retired @ 58 7 years ago. It's been the best 7 years of my life and I've had a very good life! If you you keep working because you enjoy it, I'm happy for you. If your doing it because you have to, I feel sorry for you. Always glad for someones good health.

Some people are blessed with longevity. A friend of mine still farms at 81 but he has cut back on acres. When we had a neighborhood baling ring years ago two of the farmer neighbors in the ring were pushing 80 and handled bales right along with the rest of us. One of those guys walked beans for weeds till he was in his lower 90’s. Both of them lived to be 98.

I suspect that moset of the guys who frequent the forum here manage to keep busy doing something whether or not they are still working at a regular "job" or are lucky enough to not have to do that. Keeping busy seems to be the secret to whatever you decide to do and when you decide to do it. Some say that once you retire you wonder how you ever had time to go to work every day and for some, that certainly is true.

Is that a call firefighter job at a private company. As far as I understand here in Ohio you cannot even serve as a volunter firefighter after age 65. Local garage man was fire cheif and when he hit 65 had to give it up.

I retired at 63 and wish I could have done it sooner. The last 20 years of my career were physically easy (certified Oracle database master and programmer) and paid a huge amount of money, but my time is precious to me. I fill my day with a variety of hobbies and just last year turned down $100 an hour for 20 hour weeks for about one year to optimize a system. Now at age 67 my time is worth more than that to me.

Leroy, I am a municipal call firefighter. I have never heard of any limits here, and there have been guys in their 80s still serving. I am classified as a "driver operator" but when the call comes in and the job has to be done , we know how that works.

My grandfather worked the farm with his son (my uncle) until he was in his late 80s and couldn't get on the tractor anymore. I worked with them until I needed more money and got a city job. Uncle kept going until he had to take care both his folks at 62. He's rather be in the barn with the cows then in the field. I'm now farming his land as my own. If I die tomorrow I hope it was on a tractor and kept driving till the tractor runs into something. Just pull me off it and plant me right there.

Totally agree with you. I've been retired 15 years and I'm very busy. When people ask what I do, I tell them whatever I want to.

I retired Jan. 1, 2005, maybe Jan 2 as the first may have been a Sunday. Been busy ever since. Really, I don't know how I had time to work when I was working. Bad weather times keep me indoors. Started restoring tractors and at 7 quit. Play with N Scale model trains with 2 elaborate 4'x8' layouts finished. Did all the military equipment I could get on 5ea 8' shelves and hung from the ceiling.

Currently building model ships, Artesnia Latina wooden, 1/65 scale. Have finished a Chinese Junk for a neighbor's house warming and the Nina and Santa Maria. Have the Pinta and Mayflower hulls finished.....interesting the differences in hull designs from 1492 to 1620. Will do the deck installations and rigging this winter. Have the "Constitution" from another mfgr. and half a dozen other boats finished. Built some flyable airplanes, using the battery operated engines. Realized I'm NOT a pilot.

Built a 10" x 24" Florida Excursion Air boat from scratch which was a lot of fun. I can "fly" that on my pond. Really gets up and goes. Amazing construction materials. For this I used 3 ply plywood that is 2.8 mm thick made in Canada.

Every model has a history and for not caring about the subject in school, at my age it's very interesting especially when you think about the ships of our forefathers (and mothers) and what they did to get here and establish this great country.
