Oat harvest the old way

Oat harvesting on the CARROT PATCH FARM:
Cutting and binding the oats with a John Deere grain binder (1930's technology), pulled by a Farmall C (1949 technology), with a little old driver so lively and quick, I knew in a moment it must be.....
Ray (1946 technology). Bundles of oats will be stacked vertically to dry (shocked). When dry will be piled on wagons and taken to the BLANCHARD STEAM SHOW, Oats will be run through a threshing machine (1930's technology), powered by a real steam engine (1910's technology). Straw will be recovered and baled with a John Deere baler, (1960's technology).

When out on the field there arose such a clatter,
I sprang to the computer to see what was the matter.
Away to the internet I flew like a flash,
popped open the browser, and clicked on YT forums.
The sun on the fields of the ready ripe oats
shone the patina of trusty old equipment
When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
a man in a cap with a tractor he did steer
the tall, handsome driver, so lively and quick,
I knew in a moment it must be Ray in MI

haha...I better stop now...

I hope I'm in line to pitch bundles this year so I don't end up baling straw again. It wasn't bad last year until Duane decided he needed to move the baler to the up wind side of the pile. It was worse than Dave setting up the thresher in McBride with it blowing straw straight west in to the wind.

Nice one Dan!

Not too sure about the tall and handsome. Never was tall, and handsome is questionable.

I know where they are still using the horses on the binder and that is for the whole farms, not just a small sample for a show.

We?ll probable try cutting Thursday for Junkshow. The boys put the crop lifters on last Saturday because our oats went down. It?s been about 35 years since I used lifters and that time they were on a Hesston swather. If they work on the old IHC binder our bundles are gonna look like those chocolate and chow mein noodle drop cookies mom made at Christmas time.
