John Deere MT Issues

I have a JohN Deere MT that will not start or even turn over. I replaced the battery and had the starter tested. The starter tested great. When I hook up the battery cables and try to start it, nothing happens. Once in awhile, there will be a random spark that sparks on the starter switch on top of the starter. Also, once in awhile the starter will click. The starter switch on top of the starter get really warm. What is the problem? Is the engine siezed up? Thanks for any replies.

A problem I've had with two of my Dubuques - and some other guys have experienced it also ........
is that the starter drive does not retract from the flywheel and "jambs" in place,
causing the engine to be bound up.

Put it in 4th, and rock it back and forth to see if the fan moves.

Loosen the starter in the bell housing enough to let it wobble around - and see if the engine is stuck.

On both of mine, a new Bendix was the solution.

Bill those are notorious for dropping a valve down on top of a piston. Grab a hold of the fan and see if you can turn the motor backwards. Do not try to pull start it until you determine if the motor is Fred.

Have you cleaned off all the corrosion? If the starter can't make a good ground it's not going to run.

All great suggestions but one other thing is take the switch off the top of the starter and see if it is bad 2 little brass squares that make contact when you try to start can get Corroded or burned up

So an update and another question. Before my father shut off the tractor he told me it got hot. After checking over everything, we pulled it a little and one of the pistons must have seized a little and that is why the started was not turning over the engine. As we pull it, it popped right off. Now, my question is, it is still getting hot (around 220 degrees). Why is it getting hot? It does have antifreeze in it. Thanks again.

The MT we had when I was growing up always tended to run on the warm side. I think it's partially the nature of the beast.

But if yours is getting hotter than normal maybe it's time to have the radiator checked out.

I forgot to mention that I replaced the radiator about 6 years ago with a new on and it is not plugged or clogged. Thanks.

220 degrees isn't too hot for an MT. My M never gets below that if she's working. Been that way for the last 40 years.

Just to be safe there are a few things to check. Wash the chaff off the radiator. Check the belt tension. Check ignition timing with a light. Should see SPARK in the center of the timing window at full throttle with the lead on the front plug wire. Make sure the muffler isn't obstructed. Last and the MOST important is to run a 50/50 mix of antifreeze that is PREMIXED. If it isn't you will have hot spots in the engine that could gall a piston or crack a head. If I remember correctly the premixed antifreeze will not boil under 235 degrees. Remember there is no water pump to circulate the antifreeze.

Here are the instructions from my M book, I see no reason why it wouldn't be the same for an MT

I welded together a hand crank so I could do this, everything I had was too big. Also, the tractor will start if you're a few degrees off with timing, I just put it near where it should be, start the tractor, then listen to it as I'm moving the distributor
