How to catch a burglar

My neighbor is cleaning out his father's garage. The old man passed away a year or two ago and mom is thinking about moving to assisted living.
He brought this thing home yesterday.
I was thinking if you put a few of these around your sheds and buildings you could catch prowlers and burglars.
You can kinda see the teeth on it. They are on the underside of the jaws.
It's close to 3' long.
He's going to set it then weld it so it can't spring. Use it as an ornament.
I was thinking it would be one way to catch thieves without having to exercise your 2A rights.

Yeah those things can be worth afew $$.. depending on the stamping.. any name or #'s on it??
It would be interesting to see someone step in that thing as long as it was welded.. oh what a mess they'd make.. lol

You'll wish you had an angry live bear in the house instead of a person in that trap.

Being that large and double sprung it would take two men and a boy to set it. I sure wouldn't weld it - the chances of anyone setting it maliciously are slim.

The springs can be held with clamps with the clamps welded shut. That way the trap won't be altered.

Nephew has one that someone had apparently set, then heated the springs to collapse them in the set position- so it looks set, but won't close. He gets a good reaction from people who see it for the first time over by the fireplace, including shrieking mothers snatching up their children.

Those old bear traps are worth serious money, though not typically to be used, but rather as collector's pieces or decorative objects. They're a story of one of the local hermits who noticed signs of disturbance around his cabin and concluded he had a bear trying to get in. Set a bear trap on his front porch and went away for a couple days. Came back to find the game warden caught by the boot and understandably rather irate! No harm done--he'd just recently came to check up on the hermit and only the boot heel was in the trap--and they were of old acquainted, so between the two of them they got it unsprung and the warden went on his way.

would def' be a huge huge law suit...

cats, dogs, children, or even lost grownups wondering around... would be at least negligent homicide if death resulted.

Much better hanging on wall.

Dial back to the where guy set up a shotgun to the door device in his barn and ended up killing the would be thief/explorer. Guy was convicted and went to jail for manslaughter iirc.

People have shot innocent children, and even themselves. Neighbor walks over to deliver a package of yours dropped off at his place by mistake.....

Do NOT weld that trap unless you want it for a decorative piece. As was said before, those bring some SERIOUS money, especially if it has the right name on it. And I don't mean a hundred bucks, maybe ten times that!!!!
