500 gallons of gas later.....

....and we got home. 31 days on the road about 16000 kilometers. Excellent adventure to the top of the world in Canada with a side trip to Alaska 5 provinces and 2 territories. The only small issue we had was a wiring connection to the trailer repaired in an hour. Oh yeah and the 4 cracks in the windshield complements of the Dempster gravel way. Truck delivered a remarkable average of just over 20 mpg on the whole trip pulling a 21 foot trailer in all kinds of weather speeds and roads. But they are right when they say there is no place like home. Many pictures to come. Ben

remarkable is not the word, that's unbelievable, I thought I did something getting 19 on the highway in my Silverado with 5.3.

My math says that the 13.9 L/100km shown in your picture is just under 17 mpg. Even so that is still very good considering you were pulling a trailer. Sounds like a very enjoyable trip - that is country that would be fun to see.

So your saying, &3,000.00 worth of gas , more or less? Or almost $96.00 a day, just for gas. Then there are camping fees, etc . Probably set you back $5-6 grand total, and that sounds like a whale of a trip for two folks for that price. And one of the good parts is that you could start and stop on your own time schedule. Sounds like a great trip!

Spot on Brendon ..... now if you were north of the 49th, you're mileage would suddenly soar to just over 20 mpg ...... using the Imperial gallon of course which is 160 fluid ounces vs the American 128 I think it is. We changed to litres for gas sales in '79 so almost 40 years and everyone up here is pretty much accustomed to thinking in terms of KM, Litres, etc ....... but that litres/100KM is still confusing for me since it is not a unit rate like mpg. Some things are one, some the other up here, some still in the middle of a real change. Plywood for example is bad, 4' x 8' sheets and they say it is 3/4" thick but it is only 19mm. I found that out the hard way years ago when I used a 3/4" router bit to make some cabinets ..... the fit was pretty loose. But things like OSB board and MDF board are a full 3/4" thick. Nobody up here thinks of their height and weight in cm and KG, still use feet/inches and pounds. But at the doctor's office, it's in metric. I think the American NASA and military uses metric maybe? Crazy world sometimes.

"My math says that the 13.9 L/100km shown in your picture is just under 17 mpg."

Canada uses Imperial gallons, which are bigger than US gallons. So 13.9 L/100km is just over 20 miles per Imperial gallon.

Cenrash,

Sounds like an adventure that you and your wife enjoyed together.

Looking foward to the photos.

What year is your truck. I have a 2018 and getting 23 to 24 MPG with the VV 8. It runs on 4 cyl most of the time. I got 26 the one trip we took right after we got it. Have not pulled anything with it yet but maybe willpull the boat next week

I'm trying not to be silly, but I must say that Canada doesn't use Imperial gallons -anymore- actually hasn't since the Pierre Elliott Trudeau (Sr) days. And that throws a bunch of confusion into the MPG calculations. I personally use litres per 100 kilometers or MPG (the USA kind of gallons) depending where I am.

Your math is right on, Bruce. We figured about 200 dollars a day for gas, camping food outings etc. and 6 grand is gonna be pretty close. It was worth every penny too.

Awesome you guys had a great trip and made it home safe! 13.9L/100 is pretty decent for towing a camper

Switchflicker ...... you're right of course, and metric conversion is working up here but slower than one might think since it fired up in '79 for gasoline,
before that for C temperature I think. The problem I have with so-called metric gas economy ratings (or gas mileage if you wish), is that it is not a unit rate
..... ie. where the second term is a numerical "one" like miles per ONE gallon or $ per ONE litre, or if you were buying oranges, $2.29 per ONE kilogram.
Somehow ones brain processes that easily. The litres per 100 KM is not a unit rate, but if you flip it is becomes one. So for example, 14 L per 100 Km equates
out to about 7 Km per litre. A person flipping burgers uses a unit rate, he might earn say $12/hour (a unit rate). Even though it could be expressed as
something like 8.5 hours per $100. I have always wondered though, what would be wrong with 7 Km per litre as a system of stating fuel economy? It is
essentially parallel to miles per gallon in that it is a unit rate.

Your trip is one I really would like to do some day, I am glad you enjoyed it. Your rig is very nice too, tell me about trailer tires. I am looking to replace mine.
I was told there are certain areas that don't allow hybrid (canvas ends) trailers due to wild life issues. Can you speak to that?
Get some rain up there in Bruce county?

I put all new tires on the trailer before we left, not sure of the brand but they are trailer duty 13 inch tires and have stood up well. We did not see any warnings referring to trailer types indeed there were a fair number of tents at campgrounds and even in random spots along the road. There were many warnings about bears and taking bear spray along was highly recommended. We got 1.75 inches in July while we were gone but the corn sure looks short and hurting. Was dry before that too, 30 plus day stretch in May and June with no rain. Wheat is coming off at 90 bushels per acre, and that's a de ent crop for here.

(quoted from post at 15:02:02 07/30/18) 5th vehicle purchased from Mcgees....Don has always treated me well.
Ben

We have mostly dealt at McGees with Ken and now Marty. My Father with seven cars and four trucks that I can think of. Myself , two Jimmys, a Grand National, a Terrain, a grand prix, a parisienne and something else iirc.
Last two trucks have been at Hudsons because we needed something quick off the lot after a deer totalled the Terrain. The 2nd truck because Hudsons had a higher trade in value.
When the daughter lands full time work we will take her out to speak with Marty.
Brother and Sister iirc have bought 6-7 vehicles from McGees.

Could haul drunks home in that truck or trailer this coming weekend in Kincardine .

+1. I have the '11 4.8 Silverado and when the truck is basically empty with 2 adults, it's really lively, very impressed with the performance and mileage is more than adequate.

When I add my 6'x 18' covered stock trailer with the big solid front, above 55 you really feel the engine working on it, even with the 4 speed tranny in "Tow-Haul". So I just throttle back, pull over periodically when I see traffic backing up and be on my way. Don't pull a trailer very often so it's not a big deal.
